Hon Chemistry 10-10 & 11-18 Elements & Intro to the Periodic Table

HON CHEMISTRY – Wow! Do you realize what we just did?!? We finished the chapter!!! Did you feel like today was mostly review?

Now to finish the element handbook search! You will be responsible for that information – both search 1 & 2, on the test. On the first part, tell enough to show what distinguishes that element as the type that it is, and also anything particularly unusual about the element, but don’t go into minute detail – just the main facts.

Another great resource for the Element Handbook Search (and for the TEST!!) are these video clips on copper, phosphorus, and silicon that a group of chemistry researchers have put together at www.periodicvideos.com. Watch these as you do the element handbook search. The information on these video clips will be on the test.

Hey, have you had a chance to check out the chapter 1 study suggestion sheet? Let me know if there is anything you need help with before the test! (And you’re still learning the symbols of the elements, right?!?)

  1. This nine weeks I believe I have had several triumphs. One triumph is the separation of mixtures lab. I believe I did well on it and I feel confident with the substances I turned in. Another triumph I’ve had this nine weeks is simply getting adjusted to chemistry and the workload. I feel this way because I’ve heard from several upperclassmen that chemistry was really difficult, but I’ve heard from other upperclassmen that chemistry wasn’t hard and it was just a lot of work. But all in all, I believe that chemistry has been very interesting and a lot of fun!

  2. In these first nine weeks of chemistry, I did well in understanding the concepts that were taught. One of my triumphs was completing the science in the news because it sparked scientific interest in me, and I worked hard on analyzing it and got a good grade. Another success was the separation of mixtures lab because Buchanan and I got everything done in the nick of time despite the uneventful first day. My biggest triumph would have to be the dimensional analysis test because I studied extensively for it and it paid off. All in all, chemistry has helped me to be able to learn from my mistakes; therefore, I should hopefully make less of them these nine weeks.

  3. This week’s comment is about our triumphs in the difficult subject of chemistry. During this first nine weeks, I learned so many things including how to make a good scan, study for a test, and how to conduct and design labs. However, one of my biggest accomplishments is the time spent doing all of this. I am so dedicated to make good grades, and that’s what really has made me do so well. I am also so proud that I learned to light a Bunsen burner (it’s so fun and so cool to do.) thank you for everything you’ve taught me so far, Mrs. Skinner.

  4. I believe I’ve had multiple triumphs the first nine weeks. I’ve learned how to use different apps to better my school experience, how to participate in an online classroom, and how important time management and organization is. I also learned how to design labs and work more efficiently. Lab write-ups also got easier the more we did them. Staying on top of the work load while still participating in extracurriculars has been my biggest triumph I think. Starting my homework as soon as possible and not procrastinating is really important and I feel that I have adjusted to the work load. I hope to continue growing through out the year and to continue to learn everyday.

  5. I fell my greatest triumph is that I became better at details. At the beginning of the year I was not very detailed and it hurt my grade at the beginning but now I feel like I am way more detailed. That is what I think Emmy greatest triumph is

  6. Throughout the first nine weeks I have had many triumphs, some negligible and others more significant. All of these triumphs, big or small, contributed to my ultimate truimph of finishing the nine weeks with all As. I would not acheived this had it not been for my relationship with Jesus and my AMAZING family, friends, and teachers. I hope that throughout the year I continue to grow in my relationship with Christ, become a more positive and encouraging person, and make all As.

  7. Over the past nine weeks I have had numerous triumphs. I learned how to participate in an online class, how to apply what I learn as apposed to just memorizing various facts, and how to write up a lab. My greatest triumph has been the time management skills I have gained this nine weeks. I can tell how long an assignment will take and how early I need to get started. While it has been an extremely challenging first quarter, I am now so proud of all the work I put in and see that it was all worth it.

  8. Throughout the first nine weeks, I have had many triumphs. I have become better at time management, critical thinking, and paying attention to detail. My greatest triumph, however, is that I have learned how to effectively study for tests to where I am able to apply what I have learned instead of just memorizing lots of facts. I hope these triumphs will help me to do even better in the coming nine weeks!

  9. The first nine weeks of this school year held a lot of triumphs for me. While I was originally very stressed about chemistry, I really triumphed in being able to maintain good grades in all of my classes despite the workload. I believe that one of my triumphs was my ability to roll with the punches that chemistry threw at me, which ultimately made me a better student and person. While a lot of the chemistry homework and labs were challenging, I always ended up doing well through my hard work. Another one of my triumphs was being able to do lab write ups correctly. When we were first introduced to them, I was confused, but eventually I began to understand them. Hopefully the rest of this year will go the same way the first nine weeks did.

  10. These first 9 weeks have come with several triumphs for me. First, I haven’t missed a web post. I believe this is a great achievement because I have set a schedule of when to do them and stuck to it. I will try my best to accomplish all the future web posts. Second, I have great lab partners. This is a triumph for me because during each lab, my partners and I have been able to work together and accomplish things quickly and orderly. Good lab partners are essential in excelling at labs. Third, I have stayed on top of my work. I have not allowed myself to fall behind, and I have accomplished all of my work within a sufficient time period. I will continue to keep up the good work, and I hope the second 9 weeks is as good as the first!!

  11. Throughout the first nine weeks, I have been triumphant in multiple areas of chemistry. One of my triumphs is staying organized with doing my homework. I have not been procrastinating as much as I use to in past years, which is a great accomplishment for me. I have set a time aside to focus on my homework and studying at night, which has helped a lot. Another triumph is being successful at creating my own labs. I feel like making up my own labs have made me think more about the lab, instead of just reading the instructions and not applying my knowledge. It has also made me think outside the box more than I have for labs in past years. I am excited to see what else I can accomplish and can be triumphant in for the rest of the year!

  12. For the first nine weeks, my greatest triumph would be the separation of mixtures lab. On the first day of the lab, we hardly got anything done. On the second day though we worked right up to the bell and were able to complete it. Another triumph I had were my tests. I studied for my tests effectively and made good grades as a result. I hope to have continued success for the rest of the year.

  13. In the first nine weeks of chemistry, I did not expect this amount of work from a single class. However, I am proud that I have pushed through and gotten most of it done. I am proudest of separating the mixtures correctly. It felt so rewarding to turn in the separated samples just in the nick of time. I hope to do even better in the second nine weeks.

  14. I would rate myself a 4/5 for this week because I have more motivation than ever before to succeed in not only this class, but every other class as well. I also believe I have done well so far on the Separating Mixtures lab. My partner and I have been working really well together in order to solve problems.

  15. This week, I rate myself a 4/5. I feel confident about my test, as I knew pretty much everything that was on it. The Water Bottle lab was very fun, and I enjoyed doing it! It was very cool to see the Water Bottle collapse and understand why it collapsed. The activity we did today was kind of confusing, but fun once we started doing it. I have started studying for the Polyatomic Ions quiz. It was difficult at first, but know that I know them better, it is getting easier.

  16. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. I didn’t do as well on the test as I thought I did, so I need to adjust my study habits so I can make a better grade next time. The water bottle lab was confusing at first, but after a few minutes, it made more sense and was really fun. The coding a human activity was very fun although my instructions didn’t get my person very far. I think I did well on the polyatomic ions quiz, but I should have started studying for it earlier.

  17. I rate myself a 3/5 this week. The twelve hours I spent studying for the chapter 1 test paid off with a very pleasing grade. The coding activity was very chalenging. As a class we need to work on not feeding off of each others’ stress, especially when working on something like the coding activity.

  18. I would rate myself a 3/5 this week. My chapter 1 test grade was good although I need to work on catching careless mistakes. The water bottle lab was pretty fun. The overthinking and stress made the coding activity way more difficult than it needed to be. I need to work on not shutting down when I get frustrated and confused and learn to calm down and work through it. I was worried about the polyatomic ion quiz but it was fine at the end.
