Hon Chemistry 9-20-18 Making Excel Graphs AND Graphing Exercise 1 – 2

HON CHEMISTRY: Today you are going to learn (or review) how to make graphs on Excel (or other data analysis software) by watching the video below at your own pace.

Here are the instructions for Thursday. (You are going to be dreaming about graphs before it’s all over!)

IMPORTANT: Don’t let the assignment confuse you! What it basically means is that you will make two graphs – one hand drawn and one Excel. Rough drafts of both are due Friday in class. And then, you will answer some questions about the graphs and turn in the whole assignment as a PDF – it must be submitted by this coming Tuesday, 8:00 A.M. Graphing Exercise 2 is a separate online practice of reading and interpreting graphs that is due this Monday.

You can do this assignment at school or at home with your own computer. If you use any device other than a PC or any graphing tool other than Excel, you may need to modify the instructions to fit your device.

  1. Under the worksheet tab, open these three graphing handouts:
  2. Watch the vodcast below for further instructions on the assignment AND for a tutorial on how to make graphs in Excel.
    • My advice is to use a split screen view on the laptop with the video on one side and Excel open on the other side of your laptop screen. Watch the video and at the same time pause it as you follow along with the steps in Excel. Holler if you need me to show you how to do a split screen view. Or Google it! 🙂
  3. When you begin working on the Graphing Exercise 1 assignment, pay very close attention to the instructions. (Watching the video will help with the Excel graph.) Also, pay close attention to the sheet on How to Construct a Line Graph, and How to Make a Best Fit (Scatter Plot) Line Graph in Excel 2010 – UPDATED.
  4. Google Sheets only: If you ever need to add subscript or superscripts to the axis labels in Google sheets, try copying and pasting whatever number you need from this set in to the axis title in Google sheets: ⁰¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉
  5. Now go forth and conquer graphs!!

  1. This week I struggled with graphing in Excel. I did not remember from computer class last year how to do it, but the instructions helped. It took me a little while to get a good pace going in class, and I was relieved when I was able to complete the graph right as the bell rang for the end of class. Although I struggled with the graphing on Excel, I feel that I know how to do it now for further use in this class.

  2. This week I struggled with performing all of the correct technological procedures, such as scanning and creating a graph in Excel. However, I was able to correct and learn how to do all of these essential tasks. I now feel better equipped for my time as a chemistry student and for more classes like this in the future.

  3. I rate myself a 4/5 for this week. I was able to do the Technology 101 assignments and the Lab: Graphing without a balance was really easy to figure out.

  4. This week I would rate myself a 3/5. I struggled with the graphing exercise but I got the hang of it and rembered what we’ve learned in past years. The two days going over the Technology 101 sheet were also really helpful. The Ring Challenge is just as difficult as I remembered. But, my grade for my lab write up was way better than I expected!

  5. This week I’d rate myself a 3/5. I did pretty well on the test, which was a great reward for the many hours I spent preparing. Creating the digital graph for Exercise 1 was very stressful because my computer wasn’t cooperating. Thankfully, I was able to finish the graph at school.

  6. This week I rate myself a 3/5. I did really well on completing the technology 101 sheet. I was a little disappointed with my test grade, but it was really helpful for me to come back and correct it.

  7. This week I rate myself a 4/5. I had a difficult time trying to graph in google sheets, but once I used excel it was much easier. I’m glad that I tried to figure out sheets and I think if I wasn’t so busy trying to balance other schoolwork I’m sure I would have figured it out. I think for the future I am going to work on my time management.

  8. This week I would rate myself 3/5. I did really well on the test and the lab write up, but I struggled with the graphing exercises because I was having computer difficulties. Eventually I figured it out, so I only have a small bit left to do.

  9. I rate myself a 3/5 for this week. I struggled on graphing exercise 1 due to problems with Google Sheets, but once I used Excel it was much easier. I remembered most of the information about graphing from previous years, and I did well on the most recent test.

  10. This week I rate myself a 3/5. Doing the first lab write up was a little stressful, but I’m glad I learned how to do it for future times! I have really enjoyed the graphing part of chemistry! I’m excited to do more graphs throughout the year. Getting the test grade back this week was a little nerve racking, but now I know what I need to focus more on when I am studying!

  11. I would rate myself a 4/5 for this week. I’m definitely not happy with what I made on my test but hopefully the retest is better. And felt like I did good through all the assignments this week.

  12. This weak was very eventful. What I got on the test was not what i expected but I still believe I tried my best. I have been way more diligent in showing my work and it has payed off immensely. But I truly believe God put me in this class for a reason and I’m motivated to try my hardest throughout the year

  13. This week was busy with all the labs but I think I managed and did well wasn’t happy with my test score but I believe what I learned from my mistakes from this one I can use to my advantage on the next one.

  14. I rate myself 3/5 this week. The graphing exercises, despite me having done them before, still felt foreign at first. Eventually, I began to get used to excel again.

  15. I’d rate myself a 3/5 this week. I finally figured out how to use scannable, but I still have adjusting to do and work to catch up on. I could’ve done better on my first honors test as well, but I think it will be easier next time after I am well adapted to the class.

  16. I would rate myself a 3/5 I didn’t take notes or listen very well, next week I will have to really focus and try to bring up my grade.
