Physics 4-5-18 Harmonics & Beats

PHYSICS: So why do instruments that are playing the same note sound so different? Here’s our discussion of harmonics and beats.

Speaking of discussion – what did you think about the Tacoma Narrows Bridge? Any ideas on an explanation? Here’s a link, if you’d like to see it again: Tacoma Narrows Bridge

Lab update – Friday’s lab has been changed to the thLAB: Waves and Interference.

  1. This week in Physics I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars. I really enjoyed learning about sound waves and harmonics, and I have found all of the demonstrations in class super interesting. The demonstrations really have helped me to grasp the concepts of sympathetic vibrations and resonance. I love all of the neat ways we have been able to apply sound waves and their frequencies to everyday life. Now that the weekend is almost here, Matthew, Nathan, and I will begin to work more on our project–we just need to figure out how we are going to use sugar in our design!

  2. This week I would rate myself a 4 out of 5. My one struggle for the week was trying to understand waves at the beginning of the week. I was struggling but eventually grasped it. My partners and I did very good on the lab today. We were able to finish well before the class period was over. The Rube Goldberg project is coming along nicely however my partners and I are going to have to work on it this weekend.

  3. This week in physics I would rate myself a 4/5 because I feel like I understand all the material we have gone over. A struggle of the week was trying to figure out standing waves and how waves act at first, but now I understand. A triumph of the week was finishing the lab quickly and doing it right.

  4. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 this week. We started off the week got talking about forced vibrations and I enjoyed the tuning fork demo. I was able to really understand the concept of forced vibrations along with sympathetic vibrations. I also enjoyed applying resonance and fundamental frequency to the bridge question. I struggled a little bit with the concept of harmonics and beats, but I hope to learn more next week to prepared for the test.

  5. This week in physics was probably one of the best lecture-wise. We are talking about one of my favorite things, sound and music. I have done very well this week with the conceptual questions, so hopefully I’ll do better on the multiple choice section of the test! The math is a little confusing but I’ll be able to get it with some practice. We also did a pretty cool lab today on the computer about sound waves. The RG project is also coming along well!

  6. This week I would have to rate myself a 4/5 overall. I have been getting a bad case of senioritis and I am trying to fix it. I have really procrastinated doing homework, but I still make sure I get it done. I did have some triumphs this week. I think our group did very well on the lab today and I think I am really understanding the material. I am glad we had a short week and hopefully, I can get better next week.

  7. This week I would rate myself a 4 out of 5. I found the concepts behind waves and harmonics to be very interesting. They were a little confusing at first, but when I saw examples, I began to get them down and understand them. The application part was also very interesting with the bridge and also how we ear. I hope that I can keep this attitude as we get closer to the end.
