Hon Chemistry 5-16-17 pH & Indicators

HON CHEMISTRY – Who knew – chemistry and art!! Great work using pH with electrolysis today!

How are you doing on calculating pH? Acids mean H30+ ions and pH, bases mean OH- ions and pOH. Get the pH of an acid straight from the concentration of the acid. Get the pH of a base by first finding the pOH straight from the concentration of the base and then subtracting that from 14. No problem!! So how do you think someone would use pH?

Don’t forget about learning those indicator colors I told you about. Can you think of anything else that might be a natural indicator? What about tea? Have you noticed how it changes to a lighter shade when you add lemon?

  1. Hallelujah! This is the last web-post and that in itself is so crazy! These last few weeks have all been very very long and extremely tiring with a struggle to stay motivated, but we are finally here! Summer is just around the corner! This week in Chemistry wasn’t too bad because we did activities that didn’t require write-ups, which was very nice. Now all I have to do is finish the exam study guide, which I need to make a plan so I don’t get overwhelmed, and then take the exam, and then I’m done!!. It’s bittersweet leaving honors chemistry because we have learned so much but have been stretched almost to the breaking point… but I made it and am now prepared for whatever comes next!

  2. Wow. I never thought I would make it out of Honors Chemistry with my sanity intact, but I did! I have learned SO much, not only about Chemistry, but about myself too! Even though this class has had its extremely rough moments, I have really enjoyed it! Learning about the intricacy of God’s creation through studying about atoms and the elements is the neatest thing! Thanks to the way that you poured your time and effort into your teaching, I can now say that Chemistry has been one of my favorite classes that I have taken here!

On the flip-side: the EXAM. Need I say more? I’m really getting worried about all of the information that I need to review… But whatever happens, I know that it is God’s will, and I have done the best I could do! 🙂

  3. Success: I SURVIVED! I can’t believe this is my last web post. Honors Chemistry has been one of my biggest challenges I have ever had. Im glad to see that I was able to make it through but it’s not over yet. The exam is coming up, and I’m worried about this one because we had more difficult lessons this semester. I’m trying to wrap my head around all the material. Last semester I procrasted my exam review and had to pull an all nighter. This time however, I am dividing up my review so I’m not overwhelmed. I can definitely say that I will always remember my time in honors chemistry.

  4. This is my last chemistry web post and I couldn’t be happier, I’m glad this year is almost over because it has been a tough class. I also didn’t get the grade on my project but I guess it’s my fault. It’s been great having all these labs in chemistry and I’ve taken something from this class.

  5. Wow! The year came and went so fast it’s almost unbelievable. This year was definitely one of the best years. I’ve felt like I’ve grown so much and not just in this class but as a person too. I survived and fought the good fight and I’m so glad I can say that! I pushed through when I thought giving up sounded nice and it was well worth it. Thank you Mrs. Skinner for all of the lessons you taught us this year, not just the class lessons but the life ones too. And thank you most of all for caring as much about our education as you do. Thank you Mrs. Skinner.

  6. Since this is my last webpost of chemistry, I decided to rate my level of success over the entire year. This year I would rate myself 3/5 stars. I should have taken more of an advantage of this great class. I loved the new challenges this year brought me, but I feel that I could have had greater success if I would have took them with more patience and logic. For example, I did well on the project, but I know I could have done even better if I would have calmed down and looked at that assignment from a practical standpoint. Even though I did have the downfalls of impatience and impracticality throughout this year, I know that all of my achievements and lessons I have learned outweigh them. The main achievement of this year was the carrying out of the question you asked on the first day: ‘Don’t just know how, know why.’ The most important lesson I have learned in this class was not about intermolecular forces or stoichiometry, but it was about the significance of the analysis and understanding of one’s studies, not just the memorization of the study’s information. Thus, I will remember chemistry because of how much I have grown in it, not for how much I’ve learned. Thank you Ms. Skinner.

  7. Well…, this class coming to an end is bitter sweet. I’m don’t think that I am going to miss all the labs and tests, but I am going to miss Ms. Skinner’s cool lessons and mini devotions with us on some mornings. I have learned a whole lot of things this year, and I was challenged. Anyways, I need to work more on my study guide for the exam, but not as much as I need to review concepts that we learned this semester. This week was not as stressful as other weeks because we didn’t have to write up the labs that we did, but I did kind of wish that we had a little more time in class this week to review. Overall, this year has been extremely challenging and just flat out hard for me, but this class taught me that when things become hard, you just can’t quit. You have to do the best that you can and keep moving on.

  8. I can not believe I am writing my last honors chemistry webpost. This is crazy. It is very bittersweet because I learned so much this year about myself and chemistry. I know I am prepared for the future though. This week in chemistry was a success because I am almost done!! I got my project back and I am so happy with my grade! I am a little nervous for the exam but if I can conquer the project then I can conquer an exam.

  9. LAST WEBPOST! It is crazy to think this was our last official week! I was so scared about being in honors chemistry this year, but I was definitely in this class for a reason. Throughout the year I have learned so much and I am surprised my brain hasn’t exploded from all of the information I have learned!!!! This week was definitely a success! I am happy with my project grade and have been working to finish my study guide. I was honestly pretty sad that it was our last lab (never thought I would say that). I have enjoyed this class so much and it is by far one of my favorite classes ever! Not just learning chemistry, but learning about how God created it all! It is just amazing!! I am sad this was our last official week, but happy because I survived!!!! now time for the exam…….

  10. Last webpost. I don’t know what to think. I successfully went through the year with ups and downs especially towards the end of the year. I never had to be challenged this much. I learned that I love chemistry but am a horrible procrastinator. (Sorry about last minute project and bombing a test past me, future me regrets a lot) I discovered that I should be more organized, plan things ahead, look ahead at the week, and much more. With these in mind I will get better and improve my habits. This class not only improved my science skills but my character as well. Thank you Ms. Skinner.

Now I need to not procrastinate on studying for exams. Oh boy.

  11. LAST WEBPOST!! This week I would rate myself a 4/5. I achieved this week with THE PROJECT. I did a lot better than I thought my did and couldn’t be happier with my grade. I struggled this week because I was sick Monday and Tuesday, so I feel like I’m extremely behind on everything, and by everything I mean exams… I will work really hard this weekend on studying and finishing the study guide.

  12. This week I would rate myself a 4/5. I had fun working on the activities this week and got a good start on my study guide. Getting the project back was huge relief and a big success!

  13. My last webpost, wow! As I look back over this year, I’m nothing but proud of myself! I never ever imagined I’d succeed in Chemistry, much less Honors Chemistry, but here I am! I’m so glad I took this class, even though it was extremely hard and stressful at sometimes, I learned more than I ever have. Ms. Skinner not only taught me Chemistry, but how to teach myself and how to handle several stressful situations at once. I feel so prepared for future classes because I know I don’t have to rely on the teacher or the book for all my information, and that I can actually learn things on my own and apply them. I”m going to miss almost everything about this class (not the lab reports though!) and I’m so sad it’s over.

  14. I cannot believe this is my last web post! This year has absolutely been crazy. There have been many ups and downs, but I made it out of honors chemistry alive! I just want to thank Mrs. Skinner for everything. I really feel like I have learned so much this year, and she has been the best teacher to guide me through every thing and teach me to rely on God more. I am so excited that I did well on THE chemistry project and chemistry in general. Nevertheless, I still have to study for the final exam. I, like I’m sure everyone else is, am getting kind of nervous because we have learned so much this year. However, I will do my best, trust in God, and try to finish this year out strong!!
