Hon Chemistry 3-31-17 Double Replacement & Combustion Reactions

HON CHEMISTRY: You realize what we did? We finished all 17 types of reactions today!

Careful when you work tonight’s homework! For all single replacement reactions and reactions involving forming or decomposing oxide, be sure and refer to the Activity Series. We’ll talk more about it after ExploreZone. Yes, you will get to memorize it!

Are you working on memorizing all 17 types of reactions?! But don’t just memorize them. Make sure you can apply them as well. When you start to work any equation, first determine what type of reaction it is, then figure out what rule applies and follow it to determine the products. I believe in you! You can do it!! (and yes, I realize I am repeating myself, but I do and you can!)

  1. This week I triumphed. I am so excited for ExploreZone and I feel like I am prepared. Each day I have added touches and details to my presentation. I can’t wait to get the kids excited about science. Tonight I am going to make a group message with my explainers and myself and talk about what needs to be done. I am also going to add some behind the scenes stuff to my script to give to my explainers. Overall I think tomorrow will be a great day that God will bless.

  2. This week I would rate myself 4/5 stars. I went into explore zone absolutely terrified of standing up and talking to a bunch of kids because it’s just not my thing, but I trusted that God would give me the right words to say and the confidence I needed. And it went so well!!! I’m so proud of my group and the whole explore zone. I wish I had something like this when I was their age!

  3. This week I would rate myself 3/5 stars. I pushed myself really hard during Explore Zone, but I did not follow through and work on the project like I should have. Yesterday was very tiring, but fun too in that I got to see kids become excited for science (and slime)! I just wish I could’ve made this week better by working more on my weeknights on the project, that way I wouldn’t have to cram it during the weekend.

  4. Explore Zone was definitely everything you said it would be. It was such an exciting learning experience for both me and the kids! Although I was completely drained by the time it was over, seeing the kids’ expressions of wonder and amazement was totally worth all the preparation and time spent!! However, I didn’t work on my project as much as I should have, so now I have to work on it a lot over the weekend.

  5. Explore Zone was absolutely amazing! I love kids and science so being able to combine the two was great. I was nervous that I wouldn’t be energetic enough to get them interested, but their excitement helped a lot! You were right about being exhausted by the end of the day, especially after cleaning up all that Oobleck. As much work as Oobleck required, it was completely worth it. I didn’t do much on my project so I’m kind of worried about getting behind, especially with my home missions trip next week.

  6. This week was a triumph and I would rate myself a 4/5 stars! Explore Zone was really fun but really exhausting! We used all 5 minutes to make slime and all 5 minutes to clean up and set up again, but it was worth it. I think one of my favorite parts was when a little kid asked me if it was going to explode πŸ™‚ Also, I was able to work on the Project some this week and I started memorizing the 17 chemical reactions so I’m not overwhelmed… yet.

  7. I would rate my week a 4/5 because Katie and I worked really hard getting ready for explore Zone Monday through Wednesday. Thursday explore Zone was such an amazing experience. I loved teaching the kids about nucleation cites and seeing their reactions when we put the mentos in the diet cokes. This weekend I’ll have to work really hard on my chemistry project.

  8. I rate myself a 5/5. I was so excited for explore zone and very prepared! I thought the kids loved our exhibit. We were scared the bubble solution wouldn’t work, but we had a backup plan. The solution ended up working and we had a great time πŸ™‚

  9. This week I would rate myself a 5/5. This week with explore zone was fun but stressful. I achieved in doing explore zone and he kids had a blast at the exhibit. I did struggle with how long we had to re set up but after a couple of times, my partner and I got it down pat. This weekend I will review the reactions and be ready to get back into routine on Monday.

  10. I would rate myself a 4/5 stars this week. I had a great experience with ExplorerZone this week. Teaching the kids about science was fun but from this I realized that I am definitely not suited for teaching children. It also was a great lesson on being flexible and adjust to what was better and more efficient.

  11. This week I would rate myself a 4/5. Explore Zone went very well! I was worried about talking to the kids and setting up the experiment every time, but everything worked out nicely.

  12. This week in Chemsitry I would rate myself a 5/5. I was somewhat nervous about teaching kids about oobleck but when they time came, I actually realized that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I actually enjoyed it! It was a lot of work setting up and cleaning up the oobleck but it was totally worth it. I am still working on my project this weekend, but I am also going to keep reviewing over the different types of chemical reactions so I will be ready for the quiz.

  13. This week I’d rate mysef 5/5 stars! I felt really prepared for Explore Zone, and I had a ton of fun shooting fire and playing with lycopodium. I learned that the kids learn more if you interact with them and joke with them, so as the day progressed, I became less reliant on my script and rather more reliant on making sure the kids were having fun while still learning. Overall I enjoyed it, and even though I was exhausted by the end, I’m so happy I got to do it!

  14. I was absolutely terrified having to be front of the kids and explain, but I prayed about it and God helped me get through it and it was so worth it! I had so much fun explaining and doing my exhibit! Everybody did so well it was just an overall great experience. The only thing I felt like I lacked this week was how much work I was getting done on the project. Other than that I think this week was really successful and I rate myself a 4.5/5

  15. This week I would rate myself 5/5 stars! Although Thursday was exhausting,it was also a blast! So glad I got to stand up there in front of all those kids and show them how awesome (and delicious) science is. They had a great time and so did I. I learned a lot this week.
I’m starting to get a little scared about the project, however, because the closer and closer the due date gets the more I feel like I need to work on it. However, I’m not going to stress too much. I am just going to work my very hardest on it.
    Looking forward to next week!
