Physics 2-21-17 Archimedes’ Principle

PHYSICS: So when you were floating in the pool this summer, did you enjoy your fellowship with buoyant forces? 🙂 From Monday – Archimedes’ Principle.

Great topic for investigation! Speaking of which – what did you find? When the kid jumped out of the boat, did the water level rise, fall, or stay the same? Hmmmm…..

  1. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars for this week. Though it has been a short week, I feel like we have gotten a lot done! Learning about Archimedes’ Principle on Tuesday was very interesting. At first, I didn’t really understand how buoyant forces worked. But, once I understood that a floating object displaces a volume of water equal to its mass and a submerged object displaces a volume of water equal to its volume, I began to see all of the conceptual information much more clearly. The take home Buoyancy Lab also allowed me to observe these concepts in a real-life situation. I’m still a little confused about how to work some of the problems in our homework, but I know that we will be able to go over them soon. And, finally, today was a glorious blessing to me and Karen. Saving the RICE people was an extremely difficult task, but, through the power of buoyancy and the strength of our respiratory systems, Karen and I were able to succeed!

  2. I would rate myself a 3 out of 5 for this week. In terms of buoyancy and the homework, I feel like I am doing fairly well. I believe I am actually understanding it, and the homework is coming easier to me. Honestly, I was very confused at first. It took the entire day most of the class was out on the service project thinking about how to do my take home lab in order to succeed. After the lab, however, I am understanding it all so much better. Mass being displaced was something new to me because we have used volume displacement since the 7th or 8th grade. I am so glad that I can now use displacement for another application. As for the design challenge…that was extremely rough for me. No matter how hard Patrick and I tried, nor the amount of ideas we had, nothing seemed to work out. We even observed Mary Addison and Karen’s design, and it still did not work at all after we tried to replicate it. Hopefully tomorrow will work at least a little better. Additionally, I hope I can possibly include more of these buoyancy concepts in the design than I did today.

  3. I give myself 2.4 out of 5 this week. This week has been a struggle. I have been trying to understand the concepts but it is not clicking. Im getting things mixed up, but I am trying. I was able to figure out the problems on homework though which redeemed about 1.7 stars. The design challenge was another struggle. Jonathan and I were able to reach neutral buoyancy, but to late. We tried the push the air craft using the cardboard as a fan, but it would not go the way we wanted it to. Although it was a struggle this week, I plan on going over concepts and watching videos on it so that i may understand the chapter.

  4. I would rate myself a 3 out of 5 for this week. This week I was able to grasp the buoyancy lesson well. I was able to complete the lab and answer all the homework questions fully. The part where I struggled was the design challenge. It was difficult for me and Hannah to make our vehicle neutrally buoyant. The same problem occurred when we redid the project today. Another problem was how finding how to propel the vehicle properly.

  5. I am going to rate myself a 5/5. The week began by our learning about Archimedes’ Principle regarding buoyancy. For some reason, it really clicked with me & I actually really enjoyed the lesson. The buoyancy lab was a great way to reiterate the lesson from Tuesday. The design challenge on Thursday was such an incredible blessing. Though known for our lab blunders, Mary Addison and I were able to successfully save our RICE people. Today, with the addition of Hannah, we were able to do an amazing job & get our RICE people to Argentina (even after it hit the ceiling beyond the balcony). Overall, this was a super short but successful week for me.

  6. I rate myself a 2.5 out of 5 this week. I felt like I understood the conceptual ideas, and even found the take home lab pretty easy. I completely failed however on the design challenge, and I couldn’t understand why. Today’s design challenge redo helped a little, but I’m still not completely sure. Besides that, I felt the problems on the homework weren’t too difficult.
