Hon Chemistry 2-17-17 Resonance & Polyatomic Ions & Molecular Geometry

HON CHEMISTRY: Who knew we’d be doing geometry in chemistry?!? You did a great job today! Lewis structures, multiple bonds, resonance, and now polyatomic ions and molecular geometry – wow, that’s a lot you’ve conquered in the last few days! One important thing I forgot to tell you! There are only a few elements that can have a multiple bond. They are carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur – CONS. No other atoms can, so if there is ever a need for a multiple bond but you can’t have one, the compound would be an exception to the octet rule!

Molecular geometry is super easy. Make sure you know how to draw Lewis structures, then determine the type of ABE structure and you’ve got it. Here’s a copy of Molecular Geometry Shapes – VSEPR handout. Be sure and memorize the shape and the ABE structure that goes with it. Easy-peazy!

Here’s some good advice – don’t take shortcuts. Learn the proper steps on the easier molecules, and you’ll be able to do the hard ones. And if it’s still all Greek to you, don’t worry! Keep practicing and you’ll get it, I promise!! Don’t forget to count electrons and don’t forget CONS!

  1. This week I’d rate myself a 4/5

I feel like I study really good for the Chem test and hopefully that work will show. This lesson has been a little easy but I’ve been struggling with a few Lewis structures. Other than that this week has gone pretty good and I’m so thankful

  2. I would rate myself 3.5/5 stars this week. I studied for the test and pretest really well spreading my time more so I think I did good on the test. Learning about the bonds and ions this week intrigued me. I am having a little trouble with comprehending it but it makes sense. There are a few things about Lewis structures that still confuse me but I think I mostly understand. I will watch the lessons again just to make sure.

  3. This week I would rate myself a 3/5. It’s been easy to understand this chapter so far and I have done good with the homework and Lewis structures. I struggled this week with the lab and made some mistakes but I will definitely read over that and prepare myself for the makeup lab.

  4. This week I would rate myself a 4/5. I didn’t have trouble with the pretest, and I feel pretty good about the test. So far the new lesson hasn’t been too difficult.

  5. This week in Chemistry I would rate myself a 4/5. I studied in advance for the pre-test and test that we took this week. On the pre-test, I think that I could have possibly done better if I had a little more time because I was having trouble figuring out the order between three of the groups. I’m hoping for a good grade on the test because I felt prepared and I had studied a whole lot. I did well on the homework from this week, but I feel like I need a little more practice on the Lewis structures.

  6. This week I would rate myself 4/5. I feel like I did well on the last test. I understood most of the application, and I studied in advance rather than the night before. Also, I feel like I am understanding Chapter 6 well so far, and I am happy I was able to make up the lab I missed last Friday.

  7. I would rate myself 4/5 stars this week. I studied ahead of time for the test and felt very prepared. I memorized everything Sunday and reviewed Monday, which helped a lot. I also feel like I understand Lewis structures and they are very interesting. I think I will enjoy this chapter! I also liked the picture of the golden retriever in the powerpoint. 🙂

  8. This week I would give myself 4/5 stars. This week felt like a pretty easy week! I studied more for the test, but I still don’t feel like I did amazing. I feel like I am really understanding this lesson though, and I am really enjoying Lewis structures. I am looking forward to next week!

  9. This week I would rate myself as 3/5 stars. Even though I studied a few more days ahead for this test than the last one, I was not on top of all my assignments for this week. I did not follow up on all of my work like I usually do, and I did not use my Reminder notification (to check the syllabus) to my benefit either. But, I felt more prepared for this test than I have for many others because I used the Ch. 5 Study Tips on Edline. So all in all, I feel that this week would have been better if I had just payed more attention to my assignments ahead of time and stayed in line with the syllabus.
