Physics 2-16-17 Chapter 7 Conceptual Review

PHYSICS: So glad to have Julius Sumner Miller start our review today! Here’s the brief review we did of some of the conceptual stuff from chapter 7 – torque, circular motion, rotational dynamics, and Newton’s law of universal gravitation.

Here’s the link to Julius Sumner Miller on Centripetal Force. God bless as you study for the test – I’ll be praying for you!

  1. I give myself a 3 out of 5 stars this week. I am currently studying for the test tomorrow and it is going well. At the beginning of the week, I was really struggling with conceptual questions. It has gotten better, but I am still studying to ensure I know everything I need to know. This chapter has been difficult with problems also. The problems seem simple, but I have gotten mixed up on little things, like forgetting to square a term in an equation. This chapter I actually wrote equations on my poor card that is falling apart to ensure I get them right on the test. I learned a lot about rotational inertia this week. Rotational inertia depends on two things: the mass of the object and the distribution of the mass with respect to its axis. The closer the mass is to its axis, the less rotational inertia the object has. This means it will spin faster compared to an object with its mass farther away from its axis.

  2. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 for this week. For the most part, the homework has been going extremely well for me. All of the torque and circular motion worksheets were very helpful in terms of math. I will say, however, that the conceptual ideas of this chapter are a little difficult for me. It is mainly things like precession, rotational inertia, and toppling that confuse me. Fortunately, I understood gravity and orbiting very well. Both the conceptual problems and the math problems for that section went well for me. Although, I am nervous about a few specific circular motion concepts. My time of study tonight with the concepts will hopefully come through tomorrow on the test, and I hope I have not neglected any time on the mathematical questions!

  3. This week, I am going to give myself a 3 out of 5. Though I was struggling with the conceptual and mathematical problems at the beginning of the week, I stayed on top of my studying and focused on using my time wisely throughout the week to master the material. Going into the test, I felt rather confident in my abilities to successfully tackle it. After having taken the test, I am under the impression that this will be one of the lowest test grades of the year for me. Honestly, I believe my main problem is I studied the conceptual problems extra hard this week, but neglected the mathematical ones. At this point, I just need to find a good balance of the two and I’ll do great.

  4. This week I would rate myself 3 out of 5. I would give myself this rating because I did good, but not great this week. On my homework I was able to figure out most of the problems that I did not know. Studying for the test is where I did not do well. I think I did pretty well on the essay questions and other conceptual things, but not the problems. I think spent too much time studying conceptual stuff and not enough on problems. Hopefully, I can get the right amount studying for the next test.
