Hon Chemistry 10-25-16 Oxidation Numbers & Help Session

HON CHEMISTRY: So how are the chemical formulas and chemical names coming? With oxidation numbers, you now have a few guidelines to help polish up what you already know! First below is the lesson from today on oxidation numbers, and below that the help session from this morning.

And don’t forget to add one more thing to your “make sure you memorize for the test” list: polyatomic ions, chemical names and formulas for common substances, binary acids, oxyacids, prefixes, and from today oxidation rules. Oxidation rules! We’ve really already been using oxidation numbers, you just didn’t know it! 🙂

But does it all matter? These complicated rules about naming compounds, I mean. Let’s find out tomorrow in lab!

  1. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars for this week. Though I had some trouble with the equilibrant forces II worksheet at first, especially with the infamous Zorba problem, I really understood them after taking a second look and working through them in class. I definitely need to practice more problems like Zorba, though, so I can be sure that I know how to apply all of the concepts I’ve learned. The equilibrant forces activity and the balloon helicopter take-home lab that we did this week have been so helpful in demonstrating Newton’s laws and how they apply to real-life situations. Though me and Hannah had some trouble with the equilibrant forces activity at first, we understood our simple math error and were able to find the correct angle and force needed to balance out the other two forces.

  2. I would rate myself a 5/5 stars for this week. I was attentive in class, allowing me to really absorb the material, and now I understand what to do. The homework was really good practice, so I don’t feel very stressed for the pretest. Another good thing that happened this week was when Ann McKeel and I actually finished our lab on time! We made sure that we were each doing different tasks, and the cleanup was really easy for this lab!

  3. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars for this week because I was a little confused on a few of the homework problems, but I was able to figure out my mistakes and correct them. Starting today, I plan on studying for the memorization test on Monday, so I will not have to cram.
Triumph: I kept up with taking notes this week, and I finished my lab on time.
Struggle: I am kind of struggling with answering the lab questions for the Iron (II) and Iron (III) lab from Wednesday.

  4. This week, I had both struggles and triumphs. On Monday, I did much better on the memorization quiz than I did last time. I started studying earlier than usual and made memorization tools which really helped. However, I am struggling with the lab questions, and just understanding the lab in general. I’m also struggling with getting it all done between practices and homecoming.
