Chemistry 9-21-16 Graphing Exercise Recap

CHEMISTRY: How’d you do today with your Excel graph? Once you get the hang of it, I predict you are going to want to always do these kind of graphs instead of hand drawn!

HOMEWORK INFO: You must bring a printed rough draft of BOTH of your graphs to class tomorrow – Thursday. Be sure and email your Excel graph to yourself – or save it some other way so that you can access it from school in case you need to make changes!

HOMEWORK UPDATE: Double check the Exercise 1 that you did. If you did the physics Exercise 1 (graphs had questions about motion) then you can redo it if you want to – you don’t have to redo it, but it will be graded for accuracy. Here’s the link the the CORRECT Graphing Exercise 1

Speaking of which – be careful with your hand drawn graphs! Carefully review the instructions on how to draw them. Common mistakes – switching independent and dependent variables, line not a best fit curve, graph too small, forgetting to label the axis.

Super important – when you scan your hand drawn graph to insert it into your Word or Google doc, remember that you have to scan it as an JPEG image and NOT a PDF this time! If you are using an app to scan, you’ll probably need to change the settings to scan as a JPEG.

I will review the worksheets and ask questions when I am confused so that I have a better understanding of how to draw them the right way.

  4. I rate myself 3/ 5 stars this week. I completed the Ring Challenge on time. I understand some of the topics we are discussing now. I am worried about upcoming due dates and the periodic table quiz. I am trying to find an online helping tool that will help me memorize everything. If anyone has tips on studying the elements, please let me know.

  5. This week in Chemistry, I would rate myself a 3/5 stars. I was happy because I watched the graphing video very carefully and tried to figure out things before asking Ms. Skinner! I was also able to help other students by guiding them in the right direction without telling them the answer! In the future, I need to focus on not making silly mistakes on my test. This week was not bad, but hopefully next week I can rate myself higher!

  6. This week in chemistry I learned how to make graphs using excel. I would rate myself a 2.5/5 this week I had trouble with making the graph do what I wanted it to do. But other than that I sort of understood what I was doing. I need to get better about how I work problems on my test and do them right so I don’t get counted off. Ready for the next week and many more to come in chemistry.

  7. i rate myself a 2/5 for this week. i struggled with the graphs and how to make them. i went back and watched the graphing video carefully and i still could not understand. Ms. skinner helped me today with the graphs and how to correct my mistakes. my test could’ve been better. hopefully next week i’ll be able to rate myself higher!!

  8. Application: When we did our rough drafts for the handwritten graft for the graphing exercise 2, I didn’t know whether to do draw a straight or curved line. However, after we went over it in class I realized that the points were arranged in a curve so that was line we would draw. I now know the difference in when to draw a straight or curved line.

  9. This week I would rate myself a 3/5. For almost half of the week, I did not know what I was doing for graphing. I read all of the information; however, I did not understand what it what saying. I finally was able to figure it out when I was reading the questions for the graphing exercise. I still made some small mistakes but I was able to get them corrected in class.

  10. I would rate myself a 3/5 for this week. At the beginning of the week I had no idea what I was doing on graphing, especially trying to graph on excel. After watching the vodcast and working step by step with the video, I was able to understand exactly how to make a good graph on excel. It was also very helpful having the outline on how to make a paper graph, because it refreshed my memory from 8th grade when were learned about making graphs.

  19. Rate: 3/4
The reason I would rate myself this is because I accomplished getting my graphs done and work finished in the required amount of time; however, I struggled with reading the instructions always thoroughly, which resulted in me developing errors in my rough draft graphs.
During this week I learned the basics of how to make a proper graph on the excel and on paper. While doing the graphs I found out that there is tons of minuet details that are very important and without them could result in a inaccurate graph and information. I had this mistake occur on my paper graph. While working on my graph I swapped the independent and dependent variables at first, and because of that my graph was completely wrong. Also this week I learned the importance of following instructions and planning ahead. When doing my graph I planned out a timed schedule to stick by so that I would be able to finish my work before the weekend and be able to enjoy my scheduled plans. These graphs required you to be precise and exact with your work and alert.

  20. This week I rate myself a 2/5. The reason I say this is because the graphing on excel was hard for me at first but after I kept working it got easier. One thing that was hard is the X and Y axis and making sure you don’t get it confused.

  34. This week I would rate myself as 4/5 stars. This is because I once again struggled with things as well as succeeded at others. An example of something I struggled with was the details of excel and hand graphs, like the trend lines. Even though I had pitfalls in that area though, I thought I succeeded at preparing for my element quiz, by studying for a small amount of time each night. Thus giving myself more time in the long run.

  35. This week in chemistry we mainly focused on working with producing graphs in Excel to correlate with a data set of C’s and Y’s. I made some mistakes that I have yet to correct on my Graphing Exercise 2, however the graphs in Graphing Exercise 1 were very simple to read. I would rate myself 3/5 this week just because of my mistakes on Graphing bc I didn’t read instruction right. Also, I have to quit second guessing myself, and just carry out my initial inferences.
