Hon Chemistry 9-20-16 Graphing Exercise Recap

HON CHEMISTRY: How’d you do today with your Excel graph? Once you get the hang of it, I predict you are going to want to always do these kind of graphs instead of hand drawn!

HOMEWORK REMINDER: You must bring a rough draft of BOTH of your graphs to class tomorrow – Wednesday. Be sure and email your Excel graph to yourself – or save it some other way so that you can access it from school in case you need to make changes!

HOMEWORK UPDATE: Double check the Exercise 1 that you did. If you did the physics Exercise 1 (graphs had questions about motion) then you can redo it if you want to – you don’t have to redo it, but it will be graded for accuracy. Here’s the link the the CORRECT Graphing Exercise 1

Speaking of which – be careful with your hand drawn graphs! Carefully review the instructions on how to draw them. Common mistakes – switching independent and dependent variables, line not a best fit curve, graph too small, forgetting to label the axis.

Super important – when you scan your hand drawn graph to insert it into your Word or Google doc, remember that you have to scan it as an JPEG image and NOT a PDF this time! If you are using an app to scan, you’ll probably need to change the settings to scan as a JPEG.

  1. Struggle AND triumph: At first the graphing on excel was pretty frustrating. I’m having to use google sheets instead of excel so it’s very different than the tutorial and the help sheets. Since I’m not the best with computers, it was even harder trying to figure how everything worked with not much help. But, the good news is I was able to play around with it until I was able to figure most of the stuff out on my own. I was able to triumph over the frustration and not throw the laptop in the process. Hopefully I’ll be able to remember everything I figured out

  2. Serious Question: Did honors chemistry ever decide a date for the lab of the ID of the unknowns to be due? was it maybe October 1 or September 30?

  3. This week I would rate myself a 2/5 stars. I struggled with using excel in my Mac. I also had to ask for help multiple times. It was frustrating to work with this technology at times. I understand how to work excel better now. It will take a few more weeks to fully get the complete understanding of graphing. Overall, it was an okay week in chemistry, with some stress.

  4. This week I would give myself a rating of 3/5 stars. The week started off a little frustrating, but I soon learned to understand Excel. Now, it’s actually rather fun to make graphs! The end of the week has been a little easier, however, since we are starting a new chapter. Now, I am really nervous about memorizing all of those elements and symbols!

  5. This week I struggled using Excel on my Mac. It was fairly different from the windows version, but now that I’ve figured it out, I feel much better about using it in the future. There were several times where I got frustrated, but hopefully that won’t happen the next time I make a graph. I would rate myself 3/5 stars.

  6. This week in chemistry I learned how to make graphs in excel more thoroughly. I would rate myself a 3/5 stars this week because I had a little trouble with the ring challenge and the graphs of excel. I worked really hard on making my graphs correctly and by asking my neighbors questions, I was able to overcome. I also believe that I should have began studying for the elements quiz earlier this week.

  7. Maybe we could have our own individual information for the Lab of Unknowns due on Thursday, September the 29th, and the lab write up could be due on Saturday, October 1st, so that I the person who would write it up would have a few days to do that.

  8. This week I would rate myself 2/5… I struggled this week with the computers and Excel, but I also believe I triumphed in learning patience and understand how to use excel more and more.

  9. Triumph: I had patience when doing the graphing exercises and the fundimental science on the laptops. I also am suceeding in graphing things quite well.

  10. this week I would rate myself 3/5 i think i could have done better on the test if I would have studied more. I also liked learning how to create the graphs and the lab was really fun overall i really enjoyed this week
