Chemistry 8-18-16 Lab Safety Test

CHEMISTRY: Great job with evaporating today, and great job in lab this week! Wow – you’ve learned a lot!! God bless you as you finish up studying for tomorrow’s test!

Did you read the review post earlier? Here’s the info again. In addition to the lab safety packets and the lab safety video, this is some VERY IMPORTANT information to study

  • All the lab apparatus at your lab station and in the slide show – be able to identify it all and know what all the apparatus is used for.
  • Know the parts of the Bunsen burner and how to light one.
  • Know the parts of the balance and be able to measure mass with a balance AND volume with a graduated cylinder.
  • I’ll ask you about safety control equipment and where it’s found in the lab.
  • I’ll also have the safety symbols and the information they represent on the test
  • Make sure you can both set up or draw and label diagrams for filtering, boiling, evaporating, and heating intensely.

HUGE HINT: Go back and view the earlier posts/slide shows on Lab Apparatus, Lab Tour, Lighting a Bunsen burner, Measuring Mass and Volume, etc. All of these are VERY helpful for the test!!

Also, don’t forget that the entire Exp A-1 Procedures & Techniques packet (including observations for ALL of the procedures you did as well as ALL of the questions on pages 13 – 18) is due TOMORROW.

God bless you as you study! It’s a ton of information, but you can do it!! I’ll be praying for you!!

  1. Triumph: My partner and I worked very well and efficiently in this lab. We were able to correctly light the Bunsen Burner on our first try. The only hiccup was deciding if the flame was too low. Since we worked diligently, we were able to finish evaporating the water towards the beginning of the lab. This allowed us plenty of time to get the mass of the salt and finish.

  2. My lab partners and I did Great on all of the labs this week, we were diligent and finish not only fast but while doing everything right. Definitely a five star for me. My group did had struggles with following the diagram 100% with the height of the flame not being quite high enough but we overcame and now know the correct height and will learn from our mistakes and not make it again by next time looking thoroughly at the diagram and for example, set the flame at the right height for evaporation. Question: do we strive for thoroughness and take our time while doing the lab or be diligent and try to complete the lab fast to leave time for unexpected incidents

  4. Triumph: I would rate myself a 4/5. This week my partner and I worked very well with each other. We got our bunsen burner lit after a few tries which was great. I learned to read the board every day and that it will help you a lot with the labs. I am very excited for Chemistry this year!

  5. S: Me and my group struggled to read the board a couple of times and messed up when we cleaned up everything and threw away things we needed for the next day.
T: We were able to fix everything by redoing it fast and finish everything.
A: Learned how to use a Bunsen burner, and what to do if you cant start it.
R: I would give myself a 3 because I messed up a couple of times and made my group restart.
S: Read the board everyday before you start to clean.

This lab was harder for me today but I will try not to get discouraged as I know it happens sometimes. I struggled with time management but I started to get better with this as the week went on. I tried new things this week and I am proud of myself for that.

Labs were a fun new experience for me! My partner and I worked well together, and I feel like I have learned a lot this week! However, we both struggled with time management. Although we were familiar with the labs, it took us a little longer to accomplish our goal. I think part of that is because we both like to triple-check every little step πŸ˜‰ I am definitely going to work on moving a lot faster and realizing that everything does not have to be absolutely perfect! πŸ™‚

  8. This week I struggled with not paying attention to the board as much as I should have and dumping out my filtrate. My triumphs, however, included me and my lab partner successfully lighting a Bunsen Burner, and also successfully evaporating the water to separate it from the salt. This week I rate myself a 3 out of 5 because of my carelessness when dumping out my filtrate. I had lots of fun doing labs this week and I am really looking forward to chemistry this year.

  9. Triumph: This first week in chemistry, I was proud of the work that my partner and I did with the evaporation lab. We worked quickly and got the things done that needed to be accomplished. I found it very interesting and I was surprised with the results.

Struggle: This week I did struggle with not getting to the lab quick enough and struggling to finish on time. I also second guess myself often and am afraid of being wrong. I plan work on this throughout the year and look forward to what is ahead.

Struggle: I had a hard time with the exact procedure of setting the evaporating dish on the wire gauze. Especially the right position the bunsen labortatory burner had to be in, in order to get the filtered water to come to a boil. Getting the right way the fire needed to be to not make the water boil over was definitely a challenge as well! I will make the best that I can do in oder to do it safely and quickly!

Triumph:I worked so well with both of my lab partners! It is amazing how helping hands make all the difference! Learning new ways science can work is great, but doing it with people that learn along the way with you, making mistakes, and learing from them is very soothing! Finishing in time to go over where the apparatus tools look like and where they live, was so helpful as well!

  11. This week I had a very hard time trying to pay attention to the board and do everything that it said to do. On the other hand my partner and I worked very well to over come what we did wrong. We slowed down and went through everything again and finally got it right like we were supposed too. I did very well with working with my partner and doing all the lab procedures right.I will use this knowledge to do every one of our labs the right way. I rate myself a 2.5 out of 5 this week for not reading the board and paying attention to every detail that was given. My serious question would be do you want to rush through the lab and get it done? Or do you want to take your time and do every step like it says and get a good grade.

  12. Triump- This week was full of exciment. A first full week of school, chemistry labs, and more. I believe my lab partner and I had many triumphs. One was that we were very accurate when measuring our sand. I felt that we work together well and that we get what needs to be done, done.
Struggle- I believe my biggest struggle this week was second guessing myself. On Monday, I new the lab, but I was stressed out that I messed something up, which caused us to fall behind a little. As the week went on, I know we got better. We were better prepared and on top of things in the lab. I’d rate myself a 4/5.

  13. This week in chemistry was very exciting. My partner and I had very few issues, however one problem that did arise is that we seemed to be asking questions about the lab that we couldn’t find in the instructions, so I feel like we had some uncertainty about the wording of the instructions. This can be resolved by being more confident in your work and resolving problems as they arise. We found ourself very successful in all the measurements that we took this week, in fact, Ms. Skinner noted that our salt and sand measurement was the closest to being exact out of everybody! πŸ™‚ I would rate my lab partner and I 4/5 if not 5/5 this week. I really enjoyed the hands on experience of the labs this week and look forward to the rest of the school year!

  14. Struggle- I am having trouble keeping track of time so we can clean up in time for the next period, so I am going to try to look at our time more. I also am struggling in being confident and dilegent because I am unsure of what I’m doing. Because of this I’m going to read the lab procedures really carefully multiple times.

  15. Something I struggled with this week was definitely stress. I was always worried I would not finish and I would rush things, and I’ve realized it’s better to relax and just remain calm and focused on the task at hand. Something I did well this week was manage my time well. Me and my partner,Lexi, always got in quickly and got straight to work and were one of the first people to finish each day. This week has been very helpful and I will take all the safety procedures I learned from these labs and apply them for the rest of the year!! I would rate myself a 4/5 because although we accomplished very much, I felt as though I didn’t read the labs throughly enough prior to entering the
lab like I should have. A question that I thought mostly was what could I do better to improve my lab experience regarding time management?

  16. Triumph: Although my partner and I had to redo a lab, we worked together and fixed our mistake. We also learned more about the lab, having done it twice. It was very exciting to participate in labs this week and learn what chemistry is truly about! Can’t wait to learn more and grow academically.

  17. Me and my lab partner worked really great together on the lab today we had a little bit of a tough time figuring out what was the correct amount of gas to let our burner have so the water would boil just right but we finally got it just right. Me and my lab partner did excellent on filtering the salt water yesterday we did not struggle one bit. I feel like we defiantly rated a 5/5 this week on labs.

  18. This week i would rate myself a 4/5. I was a little slow during the labs, i would read everything over again before i did something. I could improve in this by making sure i read the lab over carefully so i know exactly what to do before class starts.

  19. This week I struggled with reading carefully and paying attention to the instructions. Me and my partner messed up the lab because we did not read the board and we accidentally disposed of our filtrate. But the next morning we came in prepared knowing exactly what to do and fixed our mistakes from the previous day. I think we worked better together after this incident, learned from our mistakes and payed closer attention to the board and what we were doing. I learned throughout the week that as soon as you come in you have to get started on the lab so you don’t have to rush. I rate myself a 3/5 for not reading instructions and rushing through without paying attention to your instructions. A question I have are there any other ways to help time management other then just getting to class and getting started as soon as possible and reading the lab the night before?

  20. This week I would rate myself a 4/5. My lab partner and I worked really well together. We could improve by reading the lab directions better before we come into class.

  21. I’m a tad worried about time management with labs as they can take time but next time I will be prepared and ready to go. I also will have to work harder to keep things even between me and my partner.

  22. Triumph: My partner and I went into the lab’s this week timid and nervous. However, throughout the week we became more comfortable and familiar with the equipment and procedures and worked very well together to get things done. Although we had some trouble massing at the beginning, I now feel like we have it under control and know what we are doing. We learned a lot this week!

    Let’s make this year great!!

  25. I struggled with keeping up with reading my lab procedures and instructions before class. My partner and I worked quickly and productively on the labs and finished on time. I learned that I have to read the lab before I come into class to avoid struggling through the lab. I give myself 4/5 stars because my partner and I were productive throughout the week. My only concern is what happens if my lab partner and I mess up and have to restart and get behind.

  26. Struggle: I struggled with with time management I forgot to read my lab procedures one day and felt behind the whole time.
Triumph:I felt like me and my partner did really well with efficiency and time management we worked really well together in the labs and completely everything correctly and quickly
I give myself a 4/5 stars next week I’ll work on reading everything thoroughly next week

  27. S: Me and my group struggled to read the board a couple of times and messed up when we cleaned up everything and threw away things we needed for the next day.
T: We were able to fix everything by redoing it fast and were able to finish everything.
A: Learned how to use a Bunsen burner, and what to do if you cant start it.
R: I would give myself a 3 because I messed up a couple of times and made my group restart.
S: Read the board everyday before you do anything.

  28. Triumph: I sucessfully lit a Bunsen Burner.
Struggle: I didn’t read the labs as carefully as I should’ve causing me to lose valuable time in the lab.

  29. I struggled this week with stress over our first labs and test. I also had difficulty keeping track of time. I will try to watch the clock next time.

  30. This week I struggled with how slow I worked, aka my time management. I worked very slowly because I did not read my lab sheets as thoroughly as I should have. One triumph I was proud of this week was how I was able to easily light the Bunsen Burner. This was a proud moment for me because I used to always be afraid of harming others or myself when lighting one. A piece of knowledge that I applied this week was how to recover salt from salt water using evaporation. This was very cool to me because I never knew how to recover a filtrate. I would give myself a 4 out of 5 star rating this week. I had not manged time well during the class period, but I always tried to correctly and carefully follow directions. My question about this week’s labs is about Bunsen Burners. When you turn the gas off because of a buildup of it, how long do you need to wait and wave it away before lighting it again? Is there a minimum of thirty seconds, or is it just when you can’t smell the gas anymore, and then you turn it on? Lastly, I learned a lot from the labs we did this week, and I enjoyed working in them.

  31. Struggle: Looking back on the lab this week, I would change my time management and read over the lab more thoroughly. I found that time flies by faster during a lab than you would think, causing me and my partner to trail behind. I also realized that once you get to the lab station, you do not have the time to reread the lab just to be safe. You should know the lab’s procedures forward and backwards before entering the classroom. Knowing how to manage time better and reading over the labs more will definitely improve the speed of future labs.
Reflection: Overall, I would give myself a 3/5 for the week because of the poor time management and not reading as thoroughly as I should have.

  32. This week my partner and I triumphed in how me managed our time. We were always done before the bell and always finished our labs. This week I think I struggled with communication. My partner and I struggled in communicating a few times which led to a few minor complications in the lab. I also learned this week how to properly light a Bunsen burner. I would rate myself a 3/5 because I believe we did really well, but I also believe I need to work on better communication with my lab partner.

  33. This week my partner and I did very well on all of the labs. Each morning we were very prepared for the labs and had read and studied the information needed to work diligently each morning. Because we had done this we were able to finish early and get a head start on the questions due this Friday. We had little to no problems this week and a few questions, my only struggle was lighting the bunsen burner, it took me a few tries this week trying to light it, will have to work on it for the upcoming labs.

  34. This week my partner and I triumphed learning all of the lab equipment and working as a team. We did things effectively and accurately. This week I struggled with throughly reading instructions. I rate myself a 3/5 for this week. I believe this year in chemistry will be a great one

  35. This week I struggled at the beginning of the class to look at the board first thing. I also struggled to look at the web post every night. I truimphed when me and my partner finished our labs in time before the bell.

  36. This week was a good week for me and my partner. We triumphed in getting the labs done in time before the bell rang. The things I struggled with was reading the board thoroughly and following all of the directions. Next week I will learn from my mistakes and do better. This week I rate myself 3/5 for not following all of the directions but on a postive note, I read the syllabus and web posts well.

  37. Labs were super fun this week! I fee like I learned a lot! My only issue was time management. Even after reading my lab, I still struggled to finish on time. Next time we do a lab, I’m gonna study the procedure more so that it will take less time to actually complete it. Other than that, I’m happy with how this week went, and I can’t wait for the next lab!!

  38. This week, I felt that my partner and I managed our time very well. We finished the labs on time and communicated well. One thing I will do next week is read the lab sheets and the board thoroughly so that I wont miss important information regarding the lab.

  39. This week me and my partner struggled with reading the board and following its instructions. This caused us to mess up part of the lab but we made up for it by completing everything quicker. I will change this in the future by making sure to read the board more thoroughly and following instructions.

  40. Me and my partner struggled with finishing our lab in enough time on Wednesday. We did all the right steps with plenty of time left in class Thursday. Rate: 3/5

  41. My partner and I did very well with the filtering and evaporating lab because we read the lab before class. We understood the lab very well and worked very diligently throughout the whole class. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars due to the fact that I struggled with the use of the needle valve on the Bunsen burner. My triumph was definitely reading the directions thoroughly and having lab safety through the lab.

  42. Me and my partner messed up on our lab because we poured all the salt water out but the next day we came in early morning and started over. After redoing the lab we understood what to do from there on out. Rate 3/5

  43. I thought that my lab partner and I did very well this week. Although, the concepts were hard to grasp sometimes, we both came to class with the lab full read and were ready for the experiment. We made sure to read the board everyday and found that it had some very important information for the lab experiment. Also, I thought that my lab partner and I worked diligently but efficiently and made sure that we had plenty of time to do everything that was expected for that day. I would say that the one thing that we need to work on is making sure that we always have our goggles on! I would give us a rating of 4/5.
