Chemistry 8-17-16 Filtering

CHEMISTRY: So how do you separate salt and sand? Did you conquer filtering? Make double sure of two things before tomorrow: 1) read the lab before you come to class to do it, and 2) get a head start on the questions at the end of the experiment packet.

Your test is coming up VERY SOON! Have you started studying? In addition to the lab safety packets and the lab safety video, here is some VERY IMPORTANT information to study

  • All the lab apparatus – be able to identify it all and know what all the apparatus is used for.
  • Know the parts of the Bunsen burner and how to light one.
  • Know the parts of the balance and be able to measure mass with a balance AND volume with a graduated cylinder.
  • I’ll ask you about safety control equipment and where it’s found in the lab.
  • I’ll also have the safety symbols and the information they represent on the test
  • Make sure you can both set up or draw and label diagrams for filtering, boiling, evaporating, and heating intensely.

HUGE HINT: Go back and view the earlier posts/slide shows on Lab Apparatus, Lab Tour, Lighting a Bunsen burner, Measuring Mass and Volume, etc. All of these are VERY helpful for the test!!

Also, don’t forget that the entire Exp A-1 Procedures & Techniques packet (including observations for ALL of the procedures you did as well as ALL of the questions on pages 13 – 18) is due FRIDAY.

God bless you as you study! It’s a ton of information, but you can do it!! I’ll be praying for you!!

I feel like I struggled with learning how to use my time wisely this week. I’m going to fix this by working diligently with my partner and not wasting time as soon as I get in class.

  2. Triumph: During this lab, I feel like I knew better in this lab then the previous labs with knowing the location of where certain instruments are located at my lab station. Getting more use to the location of instruments and the process of setting up for lab, I feel as though I have gotten better at working some what faster and more efficiently with my partner.

Struggle: During this lab specific, I feel as though I am still having a difficultly with cleaning and not splashing the are in front of my lab station. Also more importantly I feel like I struggle with still being somewhat apprehensive of failure and second guessing my self even though I have already read the lab and know the correct answer to my question because it is on the board. Yet I still feel as though I’m suppose to ask you when I already have the instructions.

  3. Struggle: I struggled to get started quickly and work quickly on my labs. So I will fix this by reading the lab more thoroughly.
Triumph: I did well at striking the striker to light the bunsen burner.

  4. This week in Chemistry, I would rate myself a 3/5 stars. Abbey and I had a lot of fun working together on our labs! We had great teamwork, and we also had great time management. Something that I can work on is making sure that I am not just listening to what Ms. Skinner says, but applying it also! I am excited to see what this upcoming year holds!

  5. Struggle: I have been struggling this week with my time management. I have learned that I must start the lab as soon as I get into the classroom and follow all the directions correctly the first time so that I do not waste time. I am going to try to get to class earlier and get started on the labs immediately and not waste any time.

  6. i feel as if i struggled with managing my time this week. i can fix this struggle with preparing ahead of time for labs and communication with my lab partner to gets things done faster. i learned that you need to read the lab before coming into class in order to successfully do the experiment. i rate myself a 4 out of 5 this week!!

  7. I would rate myself 4/5 in the labs this week. We did the labs efficiently and were on time. One thing that I struggled with was making sure that I followed everything the packet told us to do.

  8. I would rate myself 3/5 for the week. I struggled this week by not reading the lab directions fully and by not getting to work on the lab immediately.

  9. Struggle: I struggled to get started quickly and work quickly on my labs. So I will fix this by reading the lab more thoroughly.
Triumph: I did well at striking the striker to light the bunsen burner.

  10. Application: This week I learned how to safely light a Bunsen burner, and I also learned the lab safety rules by performing labs all week.
Triumph: This week I was able to create sparks with the sparker to light the Busen burner. Additionally, I finally figured out where all of the lab apparatus is stored at in the lab stations.
Rate: I rate myself a 4/5 for this week because I slightly struggled with having the lab station cleaned up before the bell rang. Caroline and I worked well together, and we were able to accomplish a lot of work this week. I also feel like we did a good job at coming into class and setting up the lab station quickly and getting started.

  11. I would rate myself 4/5 for this week. i triumphed during the Bunsen burner lab and the filtering but i would say i struggled this week in not reading the instructions fully. So carefully reading the directions is something i need to improve in.

  12. S: This week, I struggled (and failed) at following the directions on the lab, and reading further ahead. I managed to throw first the sand and salt, and secondly the filtrate. I ,honestly, wish I read the board better, instead of watching other people throw away their stuff. I plan to work on this by reading everything in the lab and on the board.

  13. Struggle: I struggled getting the filter paper to stick to the funnel properly and I think I wasted a lot of my time trying to make sure it was in the funnel just right. In the end everything worked out I was just short on time.
Triumph: I now know how to get my lab station set up quickly as soon as I come into the class room. Knowing exactly where everything is is extremely helpful.

  14. I feel like I did well this week. My honest main problem was just keeping up with the blog part of the class. To improve in the future I’m going to make it a habit to come home and check the blog so I can stay on top of what we are doing in class. In the positive I feel like I handled the labs half decently.

  15. My struggle is that I did not read the directions well. I plan on reading the directions more carefully and read the board.

  16. I would rate myself a 3/5 for this week. I struggled with time management the most. I am going to work on that by getting started on the lab as quickly as possible. I feel that my triumphs for this week include being able to light a Bunsen burner and successfully being able to filter.

  17. This week I struggled with time management. I will improve this by coming to class earlier and fully understanding the directions for the lab before doing it. My triumphs for this week were Lighting a Bunsen burner, understanding lab safety rules better, and following directions. I would rate myself 3/5 for this week, considering I was struggling with time management, but also had many triumphs.

  18. This week i struggled with not reading the directions carefully and time management. I plan on re-reading the directions more than once or twice , so I am more confident on what we are doing in the lab. Also at times when the lab requires one person to do a specific thing I could be helping my lab partner with the next step. Overall , in time management , I just need to work more efficiently. Although I was struggling with the directions and time management, my triumphs were being able to identify most of the apparatus very well and quickly.I learned a lot about lab safety and procedures. From this week I would rate myself a 3/5 due to the fact of time management issues, but i learned to pick up information quickly.

  19. Struggle: this week I struggled with reading the directions on the board. I realize that I must read the board and be more attentive while doing so.

Reflection: I realize looking back on the lab we did, labs are not difficult as long as you pay attention and read the packet the night before labs can be very beneficial and make labs half as long as they need to be.

  20. Triumph: I think my partner and I did very well this week by reading the labs carefully and thoroughly. By doing so, helped the labs run more smoothly and efficiently. I learned that preparation, dedication, and diligent work, helps any situation run more efficiently, including this course.

  21. This week my partner and I worked quickly and efficiently to complete the experiment. I feel like we learned a lot and did each part well. Our only trouble was lighting the Bunsen burner, but we got the hang of it.

  22. I triumphed this week in chemistry. I learned to manage my time better and I want to improve by reading the lab before I start. I studied well and did good on the test. I would rate myself 3.5/5 for the week.

  23. I triumphed in chemistry this week by taking good notes and listening in class. I struggled with not applying myself in the labs. This week I rate myself a 3/5
