Chemistry 8-31-16 Significant Figures, Pt. 2

CHEMISTRY: I like the way you are catching on to significant figures! Here are the last of the notes on calculating with Sig Figs!

IMPORTANT: If you are going to be away from a computer Saturday, be sure and finish the thLAB: Building Your Balance early and have it uploaded to your Google Drive Shared Folder and turnitin.com BEFORE you leave!! Have you read the web post about the thLAB? You need to do so!!!

Two more super important things: Make sure you are actively studying for the SI quiz! Also super important – keep up with your homework!! The reason I give it to you so you can practice and put together all we talked about in class ….cuz I love you! ๐Ÿ™‚

HW UPDATE for Regular Chemistry: The homework from the book for tonight will be due Friday in class. The SI quiz is moved to Tuesday, Sept. 6.

thLAB: Building Your Balance

CHEMISTRY: This is pretty cool!! Have you started making your balance? This thLAB is going to help you understand how a balance works! Here’s a hint – tape the pencil down if you are having trouble with it moving around!

A couple of IMPORTANT things about doing and writing up thLABs:

  • Yes – you ALWAYS do all the questions on labs.
  • Always to the extension on thLABs if there is one, but if you are not sure, ASK!
  • The actual masses of the coins can be found on the Internet. Google it!!
  • Yes, you find your percent error on each coin – make sure you show your work with formula and units!!
  • Be sure and give yourself plenty of time to upload to the Google Drive Assignment Turn-In folder AND Turnitin.com!
  • The info for setting up your turnitin.com account is on the first day Lab Turn In Info sheet – it’s under the lab and worksheet tabs. That sheet will give you the password and show you where to find the other instruction.

Holler if you have any other questions. Have fun with your lab!!

Chemistry 8-30-16 Accuracy and Precision & Intro to Significant Figures

CHEMISTRY – So which is more important, accuracy or precision? Great discussion on causes of error in the lab and how to prevent them! Watch out on this particular vodcast – I almost did one of the examples wrong. See if you can find it before I corrected the mistake!

So you’ve been using been using significant figures all along when you were measuring in the lab! Now the other half – using them in calculations will be no big deal at all!

Hey – how are the Scavenger hunt and the thLab going? Be sure and read the post above this one on thLAB: Building Your Balance. AND make double sure you give yourself plenty of time!!

And in the middle of all of this lab stuff – don’t forget to be studying for the SI quiz!!

UPDATE: I’ve replaced the vodcast with a new/old one that hopefully has better audio!

Physics 8-29-16 Velocity Problems 2

PHYSICS: Great job thinking through the problems today!

Remember a few things: You weren’t born knowing how to do these – give yourself a little time. One the really good ones, just one formula won’t work – begin with writing what your know. These are some of the hardest problems we’ll work in physics – not because the formulas are hard, but because knowing how to reason through them is so challenging.

You are doing a great job! Some good advice – go work them again! I promise, it will be good for you. Remember, don’t open the solutions you wrote in your notes! Try them without it!! If you have to, peek, but then don’t stop until you can work the entire problem through without looking!

Chemistry 8-29-16 Derived Units

CHEMISTRY – So you think Goodman Road is getting crowded? How’s this for a “high density” city? Great finish to derived units today. Can you apply what you’ve learned? Hmmmmm………

Chemistry – Tech 101 Assignment Grades

CHEMISTRY: Have you checked your grades on Edline? If you have an ** or a 0 for any of the Tech 101 assignments, you must make corrections to receive credit for the assignment – and credit for the class. Check your grades on Edline to see if this applies to you and then read the notes below to learn what you must do.

Grade is X
If you have an X for one of the Tech 101 assignments, that means you have something wrong and need to fix it before you can get credit. I want you to be able to find and correct you own mistake. Let me know by texting me on Google Voice when you correct your mistake. Also let me know if you are having trouble making your corrections! Here are some hints of things to check.

  • Did you title the assignment correctly?
  • Did you scan the Lab Safety Rules and the Lab Apparatus as TWO separate PDFs? You should have 3 separate PDFs in your Chemistry Shared Folder.
  • Did you put all the pages of the Lab Safety Rules in one PDF?
  • Did you put all the pages of the Lab Apparatus in one PDF?
  • Did you put the pages of your scans in the correct order?

Grade is 0
If you have a 0 for one of the Tech 101 assignments, that means you didnโ€™t turn in the assignment, or at least itโ€™s not in your Google Drive Chemistry Shared Folder or in Turnitin.com. You must still complete the assignment to get credit for this class. Let me know by texting me on Google Voice when you complete the assignment and I will check you off the list. Also let me know if you are having trouble!

Chemistry 8-26-16 SI Measurements

CHEMISTRY – Hey guys, so is all the info on SI measurements starting to come back to you? Here’s the lecture from Friday. I’m sure it’s mostly review from your physical science days, but it’s a great opportunity to refresh what you’ve learned and to get ready to begin using it!

Did you remember the prefixes? Start work on memorizing them NOW – Si quantities, units, and SI prefixes. For the prefixes, also make sure that you can tell me how many of something in the larger one. (That’s what I explained in class.) The quiz on them for REGULAR CHEMISTRY will be next Wednesday, August 31, for HONORS CHEMISTRY the quiz will be Friday, September 2.

Physics 8-26-16 Velocity Problems

PHYSICS – Here are the velocity problems from Friday. You did a great job on these! Do you see what I mean about learning to think through them? Do you think you can tackle #11 now?

Stay strong on those next five problems! Make sure to do more than just show the math – be sure that I can also follow your logic in the formulas. Ditto with units, etc.

Don’t give up on the tortoise and the hare! A couple of hints: remember the problems we did in class today – it’s kind of like those. The distance the tortoise travels is the same as the distance the hare travels plus the extra 20 cm he was ahead. Also, the time the hare raced is equal to the time of the tortoise minus those two minutes he rested.

We’ll work through them in class if you need some help, but FIRST, make sure you have already worked them yourself – even if you think your work is wrong!

Now go have fun! And have a great weekend!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Chemistry 8-25-16 Using the Scientific Method, Pt. 2

CHEMISTRY – Great fun with Oobleck today! Were you successful in using the scientific method? Here is the rest of lecture from today on using the scientific method.

CAUTION: Be sure and read the questions on the Oobleck sheet VERY carefully as you answer! Lab sheets are due tomorrow in class.
