Chemistry 3-29-16 Test Overview & Lewis Structure Practice

CHEMISTRY: Another fun day playing with dots! Here’s our overview from 7th period on the test on chapter 5b & 6a. I picked the vodcast from 7th period because in that class we began making a kind of “Stuff to Know” sheet together. That’s something you need to do now for yourself for every test!

Great practice today on Lewis structures. One of the best things you can learn to do is find your own mistakes and figure out what to do to correct them!

God bless you as you prepare for your test Thursday! Be sure and bring your Lost… Project materials to work on in class for Wednesday and Friday.

Physics 3-29-16 Harmonics & Beats

PHYSICS: So why do instruments that are playing the same note sound so different? Here’s a brief discussion of harmonics. This one is from last year… includes problems AND a little further explanation of beats!

P. S. Don’t forget to continue research on how we hear and the part that resonance plays in that.

Hallelujah! He is Risen!!

HE was born, but it didn’t end there. HE lived, but it didn’t end there. HE did great things, but it didn’t end there. HE died a horrible death, but it didn’t end there. My Savior is not dead, JESUS is alive! Happy Easter – yesterday, today, and forever!!!

Chemistry 3-24-16 Resonance & Lewis Structure Practice

CHEMISTRY: Wow! Lewis structures, multiple bonds, and now resonance! That’s a lot you’ve conquered in the last couple of days!

HW UPDATE: Friday night’s homework is changed to the Lewis Structure Worksheet on the website. Also, today is the last of the new info for the test. The test Thursday will be on the end of chapter 5 (all the periodic trends stuff) and all that we have covered so far from chapter 6.

Here’s some good advice – don’t take shortcuts. Learn the proper steps on the easier molecules, and you’ll be able to do the hard ones. And if it’s still all Greek to you, don’t worry! Keep practicing and you’ll get it, I promise!! Don’t forget to count electrons and don’t forget CONS!

Physics 3-24-16 Sound Intensity and Resonance

PHYSICS: Great applications of sound today – sound intensity and resonance!!

Yes on the thLAB: Sound Waves – do that one at home.

Couple of items to apply for discussion – so how does the whole hearing thing work? I mean, I know the little bones in your ear move, but why? Is resonance involved? Great item for application/discussion! And here’s another – why would different violins produce different sounds? I mean, is a Stradavarius valued so highly just because of the name? Let’s talk more about that!

Hon Chemistry 3-24-16 Double Replacement & Combustion Reactions

HON CHEMISTRY: You realize what we did? We finished all 17 types of reactions today!

Careful when you work tonight’s homework! For all single replacement reactions and reactions involving forming or decomposing oxide, be sure and refer to the Activity Series. We’ll talk more about it in class tomorrow as well. Yes, you will get to memorize it!

Are you working on memorizing all 17 types of reactions for Thursday – and forever?! But don’t just memorize them. Make sure you can apply them as well. When you start to work any equation, first determine what type of reaction it is, then figure out what rule applies and follow it to determine the products. I believe in you! You can do it!! (and yes, I realize I am repeating myself, but I do and you can!)

Chemistry 3-23-16 Multiple Covalent Bonds

CHEMISTRY: Great job working with multiple bonds with Lewis structures today! Here’s our discussion from today on double and triple covalent bonds. We didn’t get to resonance today, but we will start with it tomorrow!

Be careful about getting too happy with double bonding – count electrons and don’t forget CONS. And what else? Oh yes, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! We’ll put one more twist on Lewis structures tomorrow!

Hon Chemistry 3-23-16 The Activity Series

HON CHEMISTRY: What!?! You mean there aren’t little blue people on lonely country roads? 😉

Great job applying the activity series! A couple of things – make sure you’ve memorized the activity series, but just as importantly, make sure you know how to use it. Now go forth and practice what you’ve learned!

Hon Chemistry 3-22-16 Decomposition, Pt. 2 & Single Replacement Reactions

HON CHEMISTRY: Here’s our discussion from today on the rest of the decomposition and single replacement reactions – and you also got a head start on the activity series!

This makes 15 reactions so far, and we’ll do the rest tomorrow. Careful though, don’t just memorize them. Make sure you can apply them as well. When you start to work any equation, first determine what type of reaction it is, then figure out what rule applies and follow it to determine the products. I believe in you! You can do it!!
