Hon Chemistry 2-2-16 Conclusion of cLAB: Element Reverse Scavenger Hunt

HON CHEMISTRY: Wow! Did you every dream there was that much interesting and important stuff to know about the s, p, d, and f block elements?! Here’s the final day – we ran through all the slides, clarified some information and filled in gaps you might have had.

As you are studying, make sure you go back and practice figuring out the period, block, group, and type of element from the electron configuration. And don’t forget the topics I asked you to research for yourself that you will find on the Chapter 5 Stuff to Know Sheet on Edline!!

To make your research even more interesting(!), there are some really interesting videos with tons of useful information at this site: http://periodicvideos.com/

The videos that you must watch from the s-block for the test are potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

The videos you need to watch for the p-Block are carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and chlorine. http://periodicvideos.com/

The elements from the d block that I especially want you to watch are copper and mercury. And there are other interesting ones you might like to watch just for fun!

The videos on from the f-Block that you need to watch are: neodymium, thorium, and uranium. Go pop some popcorn and have some movie time!

  1. This chapter in Chemistry has been a very quick one. We are learning all about lots of the elements on the periodic table and the table’s history and organization. I am struggling a bit with remembering the history of the table, but I am doing very well with knowing bits of information about the elements. I’ll be sure to study for our test next Tuesday. Looking forward to the lab tomorrow!

  2. This week in chemistry i thought it was fun and interesting learneing about all of the elements uses and properties. I am struggling remembering which element has which uses, i need to study a whole bunch before this test. I am very excited to do the lab today.I rate myself a 4 out 5 for this week in chemistry.

  3. This week in chemistry was interesting learning about the elements and reviewing those but it will also be hard to remember a lot of information for the test which I hope I prepare for correctly. I need to prepare a lot before we take this test so soon on Tuesday. I hope I work diligently in the lab today to get it completed in time, but I read over it, and it sounded fun. I rate myself a 4 of 5 for the week.

  4. One thing I did well this week was the Periodic Properties of Elements Lab. Nathan and I worked together efficiently because we were never doing the same thing at the same time. We even ended up finishing early and had time to discuss the post-lab questions.

  5. I really liked the lab this week and if was really cool to see the reactions in the reaction plate. The video taught me a lot and I liked learning about the uses of the elements. I struggled a little with finding some of the element uses but we went over it in class and I understood it. I would rate myself at a 4 this week. Time to start studying for the test !

  6. This week we researched several different elements. It was interesting finding out about each element. We also had a lab. I believe Emily and I worked quite effeciently, because we finished in a timely manner. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5.

  7. This week went by really fast for not being a short week. We learned a lot about the elements and how they are organized on the periodic table. I was even able to finish the lab early with my partner Charlie. The test will be difficult as we have a ton to memorize, but I hope I will be able to learn it all.

  8. This week I rate myself 4 out of 5 for the entire week. I give myself this rate because i feel like I started the week strong with the reverse scavenger hunt and with the lab but as the week continued I grew more and more tired making it harder to pay attention while in class. Thankfully we have your videos that I will be able to watch as I prepare for your test this weekend.

  9. This week in chemistry has been a bit more laid back and relaxing. I have learned a lot of new things that I would’ve never known about the elements and their uses from the clab. I would give myself a 5 out of 5 this week because I understood everything perfectly and I think I did well on the lab.

  10. This week in Chemistry I would rate myself 4 out of 5 stars. Lauren and I were very successful during the lab on Thursday, and we observed the trends of reactivity on the periodic table for both periods and groups. This chapter is super interesting, but I know that it is going to be hard memorizing all of the information and apply it efficiently.

  11. This week I learned some interesting uses and properties of different elements in the cLAB. It was different to research the information that will be on the test ourselves. I would rate myself a 4/5.

  12. Physical science in eighth grade helped me to understand some of the material we went over this week, but I also learned more; for example, ionization energy makes more sense now. I struggled with the pictures on the c-lab, so I’m glad we went over them in class. I believe that I am understanding the concepts of this chapter well, but I’m nervous about memorization. 4 out of 5 for this week.

  13. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 this week. I feel like my lab partner and I worked very efficiently on the lab Thursday. We worked well together and had enough time to discuss our results afterwords. I think I did pretty well on the clab, but I didn’t understand a couple of things on it.
