Physics 11-20-15 Simple Machines

PHYSICS: Wow! Do you realize what we just did? We finished the chapter! Well, we’ll add this small lecture on simple machines from chapter 7 to the chapter 5 test – but we’re done!

UPDATE: Test the Tuesday or Wednesday when we get back from Thanksgiving break.

Did you remember this stuff on simple machines from your physical science days? I don’t think you’ll have any trouble with efficiency and mechanical advantage problems. Give them a whirl and let me know!

How do you think the efficiencies of machines compare? Could you design a method to test that? You don’t need no stinkin’ lab sheets! Do you?

  1. Triumph: wow! I really like what we are doing! I’m getting the problems consistently right! I hope to continue to excel on the problems!!

  2. Triumph: I had so much fun with our rollercoaster design challenge! Its was really cool to apply our knowledge of kinetic and potential energy to make our design! We knew the inital drop had to be really big (it had to have more gravitational potential energy) so the BB had enough kinetic energy to go around our loop.

  3. Oh wow! I am waving my Pom Pom at the football game, and I realized that my elbow is acting as a lever! The load is the shake of my Pom Pom, the effort is my elbow, and the fulcrum is my shoulder! GO TROJANS!!!

  4. This week i enjoyed the roller coaster lab and now have a better understanding of why roller coasters are built like they are. I also now better understand the physics that has to be considered when creating a roller coaster.

  5. I am loving what we are learning right now! It is really neat to see how physics applies to our everyday lives, like when we designed that rollercoaster, and seeing how simple things like wheelchair ramps help us regarding the amount of force needed to do the same amount of work!
