Chemistry 8-28-15 Accuracy and Precision & Intro to Significant Figures

CHEMISTRY – So which is more important, accuracy or precision? Great discussion on causes of error in the lab and how to prevent them!

So you’ve been using been using significant figures all along when you were measuring in the lab! Now the other half – using them in calculations will be no big deal at all!

Speaking of this weekend – how’s the thLab going? Be sure and read the post below this one on . Be sure and give yourself plenty of time!!

And in the middle of all of this lab stuff – don’t forget to be studying for the SI quiz!!

  1. We’ve all learned about the scientific method and measuring for a long time, but it’s nice to refresh about it. It’s also really interesting that we use the scientific method everyday in our decision making process. This week I’ve learned that I’m gonna have to keep up a little better, but that will come with just being in the class.

  2. This week I enjoyed refreshing myself on the scientific method. I haven’t really given it it much thought in the lab, but this week it really helped! I think that the scientific method will help me with experiments in the future and I’m excited for it!!

  3. This week was great! I was especially happy when I got back the test and found out I made an A! It was so much fun to play with the ooblek and experiment with that, even if it was hard to clean up.

  4. It’s so cool how we use the scientific method in our everyday lives! I Never realized how much I actually use it until now. Can’t wait to do more stuff with it (preferably similar to the oobleck lab because that was actually super fun) and get better at using it!

  5. This week was nice being refreshed with the scientific method. I never actually realized we used the scientific method in our every day lives. I had never seen oobleck before this week and I thought it was really cool how it is neither a solid or liquid even though it looks and feels like a solid and liquid. I hope we do more labs like this in the future and can not wait to learn more about chemistry.

  6. This week I enjoyed refreshing my memory on the scientific method and significant figures. I learned that the scientific method is crucial in making everyday decisions in our lives and not just scientists’. I would rate myself a 4 this week because I kept better track of my time during the oobleck lab.

  7. Now that I’ve gotten into the swing of things, my time management was better on the Oobleck lab. It was an interesting lab that I enjoyed performing. I’m also starting to perfect my note-taking skills 😉 I look forward to doing more labs like this one in the future.

  8. This scavenger hunt is cracking me up! I can’t wait to see the look on a teacher’s face when I ask to measure their pinky! This week was a really nice review and refresh but I’ve got to crack down on this SI stuff this weekend and commit it to memory. I had a great time playing with Oobleck and I’m excited to see what next week brings.

  9. This week, I learned more about significant figures and gained a better understanding of them and the other material we went over. I feel like I did pretty well on the Oobleck Lab and I really enjoyed it, so overall I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 for this week.

  10. This was awsome! Making a great grade on the test helped me understand what I need to do in order to retain information. I give myself a three out of five stars because I missed a homework assignment. I have learned from my mistake and am ready to work hard to understand all this information.

  11. This week I have been taking notes on the Scientific Method learning about the difference in Accuracy and Precision along with SI Units. I have gained an understanding of how to use these but still need to study more.

  12. It was nice to get a refresh on the SI system, and I learned that theres two ways to round with a number ending in 5. It was also really fun playing with the Oobleck.

  13. Learning the differences between accuracy and precision was very interesting. I also enjoyed the lesson about identifying sig. figs. I would rate myself as a four because I neglected to turn in a homework assignment.

  14. This weeks, I struggled a little with remembering all the new rules with sig figs, but reviewing on my homework makes it easier! I really enjoyed learning about the conversion factors because I recalled much of it from my past math classes. I would give myself a 4 this week because I was a little lost with the ID of Unknowns lab, but eventually I eventually caught on.
