Chemistry Chapter 6 Review

high speedCHEMISTRY: Do you feel like you are under water with all that you have to do? Are you ready for the test Monday?!? Help session Monday morning, 7:15ish A.M.

Let me give you some hints about making out your own study suggestion sheet for the test. First start by getting organized. If you didn’t do it in class on Friday, make a chart, a really big chart of “What I need to memorize,” “What I need to know how to do,” and “What I need to be able to apply/discuss.” Then start practicing the things you have have the list!! Practice is especially important on the “problem” like objectives such as Lewis structures, drawing ionic bonding, etc. I would also encourage you to make lists of possible discussion questions and then practice answering them for the test. If there are things you are unsure about, go back and watch parts of old vodcasts.

A great way to help you study is to use the “Visual Concepts” part of the online textbook for this chapter. It provides an oral and visual review back through the chapter and also has practice quizzes, etc. It is great! You can access this site by clicking here on the Chemistry Online Textbook or over on the right side of this page, or through Edline. The user name is csbec and the password is chemistry. (Both of these show up when you move the mouse over the online textbook link on Edline.)

And don’t forget that a great place to prctice dot notation and Lewis structures is at sciencegeek.net and practice the things from our chapter that are in the Unit 3 Review Activities. You get feedback right away to know if your answer is right or not, and that’s a good thing.

We’ve covered quite a lot in this chapter. God bless you as you study! I’ll be praying for you!!

  1. Ms. Skinner,
Could I take my chemistry test Wednesday or Thursday? I will be traveling all day tomorrow. I’ll be at school Tuesday.

  2. Because we reviewed chemical formulas today in class and we didn’t do what was on the syllabus, will everything including homework be moved back one day?

  3. This week, I rate myself a 3.5 out of 5. This is because I understood the chemical formulas, and how to balance their charges, but when we applied it, i had some trouble getting the hang of it.

  4. I learned this week about how colour change, production of gas, and forming a precipate is just some of the indicaters that there was a chemical reaction. When seeing the bill the gummy bear experiment i notice another reaction such as sound was giving off due to the chemcial reaction. I also would rate my self about a 3.5 this week because i feel i wasnt as focus as i feel i was in the begning.

  5. This week I learned that one of the rules for writing chemical equations is that the equation must be balanced and satisfy the law of conservation of mass. This is important because it distinguishes if I’m writing the chemical equations correctly. I would rate myself a 3 out of 5 on this because I understand it but also feel that I need more practice on it.

  6. This week in rate myself a 3 out of 5. I give my this score because of how I struggled on the Mahjong element app. I feel like I can improve on that by downloading the app and studying the charges of the periodic table. I also give myself that grade because of how I did on the quizzes I believe I can improve on those by again just studying the periodic table again.

  7. Sorry about the repost I posted this on my IPad and had not change the settings to say C7 instead of P7

  8. This week I rate myself a 4 out of 5 because it was very easy for me to get the hang of chemical equations. Also writing the equations brought back some memories of last year and helped me remember what ICP taught me. I plan to work more on balancing chemical equations so I can be the best I can.

  9. i refreshed my brain about how to work chemical equations and about production of gas, light, heat when a chemical reaction occur.

  10. I rate myself 4.5-5 stars this week. I understood how to get oxidation numbers and I knew my chemical formulas. I also learned how to balance chemical equations. I feel like I need to practice on it more but I know that both sides of the equation have to be equal. For them to be equal you do not use coefficients but you use the number of molecules. I feel like it’s very understandable if I practice it a few times. I would like to have a help session sometime.

  11. I rate myself 3 outa 5 this week because I didn’t understand how todo the oxidation on the Mah Jang app until someone explained it. But I did know how to use coefficients for the names of compounds. I did learn more about balancing chemical equations.

  12. This week I have learned a lot using the Mahjong chem app. A couple extra days using the ipads really helped me understand what I was doing. It showed me how to find the correct oxidation numbers. I’m still refreshing my brain on chemical formulas so I have been practicing a lot outside of school. I would rate myself a 3 out of 5 for this week.

  13. this week, I learned a lot of information dealing with balancing chemical formulas and naming compounds. the last couple days really helped me get some extra practice on how to work these problems. Doing the work on the iPads gave me some really good examples of these problems. I feel like I need to improve on finding the oxidation number for a certain element in a compound. like the mahJong app. to help me get more practice I am going to download this app and practice this problems until I have mastered it. also , I thought it was cool doing the chemical reaction in class and understanding what observations produce a chemical reaction. I give myself a 4 out of 5 for the week because I struggled with oxidation numbers.

  14. This week I really struggled with balancing equations because their is so many thing to remember about it to make sure it is a correct equation. The practice in class today helped me a little bit to understand more about how to set the equations up. I would rate myself 2 out of 5 because i really struggled with balancing equations.

  15. The ipad apps and websites were very helpful this week. It helped me better understand how to balance chemical formulas and name them. With a little more practice outside the classroom I should be well prepared for question involving balancing and naming chemical formulas.

  16. I learned a lot this week. Doing the ipad practices really helped me figure out how to balance equations. They helped me figure it out on my own and I think i will remember it better and learned it better because i figured it out for myself.

  17. I rate myself a 2 out of 5 this week. Even though the ipad practices helped balance equations I still struggled on it a lot. The chemical formulas also became more clear and easier to understand to me with all the practice.

  18. Using the ipads really helped me understand how to better understand chemical equations. This helped refresh my mind about charges of different elements and helped me understand why chemical equations are written the way they are.

  19. This week i learned alot about how to do and balance chemical equations. I really enjoy doing the balancing equations because i understand it. i rate myself a 4 out of 5.

  21. I give myself 3 out of 5 stars this week. First, I do not feel like I did great on the test. Also, it took me a little bit to remember how to do the chemical formulas, but after I practiced for a while on science geek.com it started coming back to me and I did better on the online exercises. I also found that if I wrote the formulas on paper first, I did better than if I tried to do them in my head.

  22. I give myself a 4/5 because I feel like I did really well on my test, and I also am really good at balancing the chemical equations. However, I still need to memorize the polyatomic ions and the acids better. The CLab came really easy to me and I finished in no time! I’m excited to continue this chapter because I know what I’m doing!

  23. While we did not have as many lessons as usual this week, I still learned a lot and brushed up on my chemical formula skills through Mahjong and the quizzes on the iPads. I rate myself a 4/5 this week because I did well on those quizzes and on Mahjong. I also feel like I did good on the test.

  24. i rate myself a 3 out of 5 this week because i really struggled with the mahjong quiz but then i redeemed myself today with the balancing equations clab

  25. I would give myself a 4 out of 5 starts this week. I struggled with the mahjong but I went back and looked at my notes and the book and learned how to do it. I also did the science geek quizzes pretty easily and feel like I remember most of what we covered at the begging of the school year.

  26. This week I rate myself a 4 out of 5. I did well on the chemical equations review. The oxidation numbers review was a little more difficult, so I had to look at my notes to help me. However, I was glad for the review.

  27. This week I would rate myself a 3 out of 5. I learned how to write chemical formulas and I’m pretty good at it. I Struggle a lot with balancing equations though. I need to practice them. That clab we did in class today helped me a lot with balancing equations.

  28. I’d give myself a 3 out of 5 for the week. I really have the oxidation numbers, ionic, and covalent compounds down pat after all the practice. After practicing over the weekend and going to the help session, I think I did pretty well on my test. Showing what’s going on in a chemical reaction is what I still really need practice on. Hopefully as I do this balancing equations sheet I’ll begin to get better at balancing equations

  29. This week in class I learned how to balance chemical equations. The ipads we used this week and the computers really helped me practice balancing chemical equations. Also, I learned this week about the rules of writing a chemical equation. One of the rules is that the law of conservation of mass has to be satisfied. I would rate myself a 3 out of 5 for the week because I think I need to practice balancing equations more.

  30. I rate myself a 3 out of 5 this week because I initially struggled with the Mahjong oxidation number game and the online quizzes. To better myself at these skills for the upcoming chapters, I went home and practiced them and then was successfully able to complete all 3 activities and understand the CLab.

  31. I would rate myself a 3 out of 5 this week. I have had some trouble with balancing equations but the clab we did today really helped me understand them better.

  32. This week I would give myself a 4 out of 5 for the week. Using the ipads really helped me to refresh my memory on chemical formulas. The new chapter that we started I am struggling with. I need more practice writing out the formulas and figuring out the correct coefficients. I know with lots of practice, I will eventually get them down.

  33. This week I had to re-learn how to do oxidation numbers on the Mahjong Chem app which I really struggled with but eventually I figured it out. I had no trouble with the chemical equations. So I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 this week.

  34. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 because I feel like I did well on the test, although I could’ve studied more. Also, balancing equations has started becoming easier for me, and the website activities really helped.

  35. I enjoyed doing the class lab today! Last night, I was a little confused on the homework, but doing this really clearly up a lot of the confusion! At first, I was dealing with the hydrogen and oxygen first, but then dealing with those last really helped! Balancing the equations seemed overwhelming at first, but once I worked a lot of different types of problems, I got the hang of them!

  36. I would rate myself 3-5 this week because I learned about what to look for that indivates a chemical reaction. I also learned more about balancing equations.

  37. This week I rate my self 3 of 5 because I don’t really understand balancing chemical equations. But the concept seems pretty easy and I learned that if you didn’t study your chemical formulas and oxidation numbers you won’t get any of this.

  38. I rate myself a 3 out of 5. I had some difficulty doing the Mahjong chem game, but after remembering the oxidation number I had no problem.I also learn how to balance an equation using the Law of Conservation of Mass.

  39. This week I rate myself a 3 out of 5. I really enjoyed the lab that we did and it helped with being able to balance equations. I struggled with the chemical equations but after doing the homework, I am more confident. I kept forgetting to put plus signs and I forgot some of the chemical symbols. After homework and class work I am confident that I will do good on these problems.

  40. This week I give myself a 3.5 out of 5. The test was alright for me, although, I still feel like I could have studied harder.
The mahjong game also confused me at first but I eventually figured it out, and even have some memorized now.
The science geek quizzes were also pretty good for me. Although, being gone for Friday, I get one less day of practice on balancing chemical equations, so I will look over that too,as there is a lot of meticulous work in them. I also learned I need to look over my polyatomic ions…. I learned that this week,as I found out I’m quite rusty with them. But after some practice, I think I will be good to go.

  41. I feel like I really understand electron dot notation and Lewis structures! However molecular structures gave me some trouble. I had trouble understanding which way the dipoles were supposed to face. For this reason I rate myself 3 out of 5.

  42. This week I feel like I really struggled when it came to remembering how to do oxidation numbers at first. The mahjong chem game was very difficult because of this. After I looked back over my notes and googled how to do them, I was able to accurately finish the game with a good score of 136 when we only needed a 100, so when it came to having to get a 136, it was easy. The first quiz on science geek wasn’t too hard but I had to take it several times to figure out what I doing. The second quiz was much easier because I remembered most of the prefixes (except for 5 which I now know is penta). Overall, it was quite a successful week when it comes I reviewing. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5.

  43. this week i probably rate myself a 4 out of 5 on the balancing equations when i first started it was a little rough but as the week went on i got really good at them. I also finally figured out how to play the mahjong chem game once i remembered that you had to use oxidation numbers.

  44. after working on the clab it helped me a lot on the balancing equations. after working in class this week I rate myself a 3 out of 5. I had forgot some of the formulas but homework and class helped me remember some!
