Chemistry 2-27-15 Conclusion of cLAB: Element Reverse Scavenger Hunt

CHEMISTRY: Wow! Did you every dream there was that much interesting and important stuff to know about the s, p, d, and f block elements?! Here’s the final day – we ran through all the slides, clarified some information and filled in gaps you might have had.

As you are studying, make sure you go back and practice figuring out the period, block, group, and type of element from the electron configuration. And don’t forget the topics I asked you to research for yourself that you will find on the Chapter 5 Stuff to Know Sheet on Edline!!

To make your research even more interesting(!), there are some really interesting videos with tons of useful information at this site: http://periodicvideos.com/

Some great videos to watch from the s-block for the test are potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

Some great videos to watch for the p-Block are carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and chlorine. http://periodicvideos.com/

Some great videos to watch from the d block are: copper and mercury. And there are other interesting ones you might like to watch just for fun!

Some great videos to watch from the f block are: neodymium, thorium, and uranium. Go pop some popcorn and have some movie time!

  1. This week I would rate myself 4 out of 5 stars because it was very neat to see how each element was used and I really understood the material better than before.

  2. I give myself a 4 out of 5 this week because I had some trouble finding out what some of your clues on the scavenger hunt were, but I feel like I’ve caught up on my work and on the lessons!

  3. I rate myself a 3 out of 5 because I had trouble figuring out some of the pictures on the reverse scavenger hunt but I watched the vodcasts and understood most of it!

  4. I give myself 3 out of 5 stars because I couldn’t find some of the answers to the scavenger hunt. I learned that you really have to think about the clues! I hope there are other activities like these this in the future

  5. I give myself 3 out of 5 stars because I couldn’t find some of the answers to the scavenger hunt. I learned that you really have to think about the clues! I hope there are other activities like these this in the future!

  6. this week I learned many different characteristics and properties of elements in the s,p,d, and f-block. I struggled with finding some of the pictures for the elements and I will go back and research the pictures to try to find out the correct information. I did really well with most of the elements though. these elements will help me learn more about them in the long run and on the test. most of the characteristics where really interesting. I give myself a 4 out of 5 for the week.

  7. On the reverse element scavenger hunt I was having trouble figuring out what the gold band with the anchor on it was under the gold element section. Could you please help me.

  8. I would rate myself a 4 or 5 stars for this week. I rate myself this because I got most all of the the element clues except a few which gave me a hard time, but other than that I know a lot more about elements.

  9. Even though we weren’t here much this week I really learned a lot of different uses for several elements. The most intriguing to me was the video we watched in class about arsenic and how it can affect and possibly kill a person.

  10. I would give myself a 4 out of 5 for this week because I have gotten most of the element research clues but I didn’t give myself a 5 out of 5 because I didn’t get all of the element research very fast

  11. I give myself a 4 out of 5 this week because I understand the significant characteristics of each of the groups on the periodic table. The c-lab and the notes that you gave us in class has helped me on knowning these things.

  12. This week I learned the many different uses of each element on the periodic table. For example, I learned that Krypton is used in the production of semiconductor integrated circuits.

  13. I give myself a 4 out of 5 this week! I learned a lot from the research element lab, but some of them were hard for me to find. but searching for the answers helped me learn.

  14. I rate myself a 3.5 out of 5 this week because I successfully completed all the homework from these week, but I am struggling with understanding the concepts that are in the second part of this chapter

  15. i rate myself 3 out of 5 because understood most of the material but struggled with some of it. The vodcasts also helped alot.

  16. This week, I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 because I understood most of what the pictures meant the further I went along. I didn’t have as much trouble the more I got into it.

  17. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 because on the clab I found a lot of uses and characteristics for the elements, but i did have trouble with some of the pictures but other than that it was a pretty good week

  18. I’d rate myself 4 out of 5 because I felt like I was very productive this week despite being out of class so much. I had trouble figuring out what some pictures were on the element scavenger hunt, but I discovered lots of everyday applications of the elements.

  19. This week I continued to better understood the uses of different elements through the reverse scavenger hunt. It is amazing all the different ways each element is used. Some are more common knowledge while some I would have never guessed!

  20. I give myself a 3 out of 5 this week. I contined to understand the uses ofdifferent elements through the reverse scavenger hunt. It is amazing all the different ways each element is used. Some are more common knowledge while some I would have never guessed!

  21. I would rate my self a 4 out of 5 this week. I fell I deserve a 4 because I have been understanding the lesson. The scavenger hunt was a lengthy lab but it was fun and I learned a lot from it. It showed me different uses for different elements.

  22. I would rate myself a 2 out of 5 this week because I really fell behind on the reverse scavenger hunt. I had to rush to finish it and I felt I wasn’t nearly thorough enough as I should have been. I am going to fix it by going back through and checking the elements for incorrect or incomplete answers.

  23. This week I would rate myself a 3/5 because I feel I have done very well on the ionic bonds and I have learned how to use the dot notation with it since it’s required. But I also struggled with some of the Lewis structures because I often found myself stuck counting and recounting electrons. Also I have have been spending the past hour trying to get today’s honors Chen video to work and I haven’t been able to pull it up. I was wondering if this is maybe an Internet problem or something else.

  24. Learning about the way Neopoleon died was very interesting. That arsenic was all over the design in his wallpaper was also pretty informing.

  25. I would rate myself a 2 out of 5 this week, mostly because i was really sick with the flu and a bad cough. but for the day that I was here i liked the video on how Nepoleon died, who knew they had so much arsenic in their wallpapers back then

  26. This week I succeeded in the fact that I set aside time to study over the weekend so I had more time to absorb the material, and I feel that it helped me greatly on the test.

  27. In the Day One DVD that we are watching this week, I am learning so much more about the applications scientists made with Uranium-235 and Plutonium! The electronic labs we have done before with these elements involving fission, chain reactions, and the creation of the atomic bomb have allowed me to understand the scientists’ perspective much better after watching Day One.

  28. I give myself 4/5 stars on the video packet so far. I got almost all the words straight from the video and I think I answered them correctly.

  29. This week I would rate myself 4/5 because I gave myself plenty of time to study for the test we took on Tuesday and have been filling in the answers on the packet as it tells the information on the Day One video.

  30. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 this week because I believe I did well on the test this week. I have also been taking notes on the video and I have learned quite a bit about the atom bomb.

  31. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 this week. I feel like I did better on this test than the last. I’ve always been finding some of the answers to the packet online since we haven’t been able to watch the videos at school!

  32. I rate myself a 4 out of 5 this week. I rate myself this, because I feel that the test was easier for the than others (Probably because I actually studied how I needed to). Watching that video in class also helped me learn so much more about the process of building the atomic bomb.

  33. When studying for the test, especially this chapter’s because of all the snow days, remember to go back to the very beginning of what we learned. Look over the first notes you took and re read the chapter to refresh your memory. Always take more than one day to study or the information will not be retained.

  34. This week I rate myself 4 out of 5 because i really felt like i finally understood noble gas notation, and I learned characteristics of elements.

  35. For this week I rate my self 4 out of 5 stars. I feel like I did well on the test because I studied for it like the study suggestion sheet on edline said. Also, I finished the test this time because I paced myself and did the back-side problems first.

  36. I will give myself 3 out of 5 stars because although i felt i did well in my test i cant be sure i will have a good score and the video one video gives me a better understanding about the atomic bomb

  37. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars this week because I studied hard and felt like I did well on my test.

  38. I rate myself 4 out of 5 stars this week because I think I did better on this test than I did on the last test. I think I did better because I allowed myself more studying time than I did on the previous tests. I learned new things about the atomic bomb in the video we watched this week. I didn’t realize that they took scientists from different universities to help make the bomb. Also, I didn’t realize how much uranium the bomb actually needed and I didn’t realize that it was such a risky, dangerous experiment!

  39. i rate myself 4 out of 5 stars because i understood the chapter after i watched all of your vlog posts. also, i think i did well on my test and paced myself a lot better on this test.

  40. I rate myself a 5 out of 5 stars because I studied a lot for the test and had time to check over my test.

  41. I enjoyed watching the Day 1 video. Even though we only watched a little bit of it, I learned quite a lot in that little time. I did not know that General Lewis Groves was the one in charge of the whole Manhattan Project. I did not know that he had to travel everywhere just to collect information. That must have been quite tiring! Also, I did not know that there were so many disputes! It obviously was not a smooth ride.

  42. I would rate myself a 4 out of 5 stars this week. This week’s test was easier than the last test for me, as I did the pretest and studied more efficently. I also enjoyed watching the Arsenic video regarding Napoleon and the Marsh test,on how to spot arsenic.
Overall, I felt like this week was good for me.
