Physics 8-20-14 Relationships Among Data

PHYSICS: Are you? A hoarder, I mean? I soooooo don’t want you to be that person that has a million facts crammed in their head, none of which are useful for anything because you can’t apply what you know. So lets work on that this year. Did all the info on types of proportions and graphs come back to you?

Looking forward to seeing what you do with the lab tomorrow! 🙂

  1. Sorry for taking so long, the game went a little late. In the human density lab, we should fill it with pre-measured quantities, e.g. those giant water containers someone puts in office buildings and you fill cups up with. it would be more precise than a water hose.

  2. Here is the general idea for the density lab. We will weigh the volunteer with a scale and convert it to mass. Then, we will soak the person with water. That way, they won’t bring more water with them after they get out of the trashcan. Next, they will slowly lower themselves into the trashcan full of water. When they get out, we will measure how much water was displaced by measuring the water it takes to fill the trashcan back up to find the volume. We also need to discuss how we will fill the trashcan and how we will measure that. I know JT has those big office water bottles, but we will also need something smaller to finish filling the trashcan.

    • I agree with Rebecca’s general idea. I think the large office water bottles would be best for most of the trashcan, but when it gets close to full perhaps we could use large beakers or graduated cylinders? What do y’all think? Also, I’ll be posting the heights of each drop of the golf ball lab here shortly.

  3. For the 100 cm drop, the three heights of the bounce were: 82.80 cm, 81.30 cm, and 82.40 cm. For the 75 cm drop, the following bounce height was: 62.70 cm, 62.80 cm, and 63.10 cm. Finally, for the 50 cm drop, the heights measured: 42.10 cm, 42.40 cm, and 41.70 cm!

  4. I have the large 15 liter container in my car ready to use whenever our dearest Karlie is back with us. I will bring it in the morning Ms. Skinner!

  5. assuming the trash can holds around 50 liters, that should be 3 containers and one 5L or 5 1L containers to finish.

thank you marti for the measurements. What i’m confused about is if the water we soak ourselves with will interfere with the amount in the bucket?

  6. I should be in class tomorrow so i will bring my bathing suit clothes and a towel tomorrow just in case we do it! im so sorry i havent been here for this

    • K – Welcome back!! We have missed you! We decided today that it might be better to wait until the end of this chapter – after the test, to do the Human Density lab. We wanted to make sure to were good and healed before we dunked you!! :))
