Hon Chemistry 4-30-13 Stoichiometry Practice

HON CHEMISTRY: Good job today! I know that kind of sounds crazy since we only did one problem, but I loved the way you worked through that sticky problem today! They won’t all be plug and play in the real world!

Happy baking with the thLAB. Make sure you read the lab carefully and are sure of what you are supposed to do before you do something irreversible with your bag of sugar!

Physics 4-29-13 Color

PHYSICS: Oh. My. Word! Can you believe it?!? Your very last lecture in high school physics! Wow!!

How’d you like playing with color? So now, why is an apple red? So….here’s the lecture on color – colors of light, and colors of pigment.

Don’t forget – lab books and Six Flags packet due Wednesday! Also, if you are going on the NHS service project, bring your physics book, cleaned out and erased!, to the room before you leave so that it can be checked. You can pick up your book Wednesday afternoon.

I still can’t believe it.

Hon Chemistry 4-29-13 Percent Yield

HON CHEMISTRY: So after I squeezed the microphone shut all period, I forgot to upload to Blip! So here’s an old lecture on percent yield. It’s the last of the applications of stoichiometry problems. Lots easier that limiting reactants, I think. You realize what we’ve done… we’ve finished the chapter!!

Chemistry 4-25-13 Double Replacement & Combustion Rxns

CHEMISTRY: Wow! Can you believe we finished all 17! Here’s the lecture on the review and new notes on double replacement and combustion reactions.

Now that you’ve got everything on paper, let’s play with the real thing on Monday. First, the quiz, then we’ll do the experiment! Tuesday you’ve got to remind me to show you this really cool demo on combustion rxns. I call it “flaming bubbles”! But don’t forgot – we’ll start with the quiz on Monday! Good luck studying, I’ll be praying for you!!

Hon Chemistry 4-25-13 Limiting Reactants

HON CHEMISTRY: Okay, really, it’s not the hardest thing you’ve ever done – you deal with limiting reactants in your life all the time. Now we’re just applying that same concept with chemical reactions! 🙂 Help session?

UPDATE – Did you get the message that the thLAB: Limiting Reactants in a Recipe has been postponed for now. I’ll let you know when we’ll do it.

Chemistry 4-24-13 Single Replacement Reactions

CHEMISTRY: Good job today on single replacement reactions! And today you got a head start on the activity series. Good job!

We’ve done 15 so far – how are you doing on memorizing them?! Careful though, don’t just memorize. Make sure you can apply them as well. When you start to work any equation, first determine what type of reaction it is, then figure out what rule applies and follow it to determine the products. I believe in you! You can do it!!

Hon Chemistry 4-24-13 Stoichiometry

HON CHEMISTRY: Wow! Great job today! Here’s your first lecture on reaction stoichiometry. You did a great job applying what you remember about moles from earlier this year! Dont’ forget the keys! Now all you need is some practice and you’ll have it down pat. 🙂

ExploreZone 2013

Wow! You guys are the GREATEST!! Thanks to you, ExploreZone was a HUGE success! The elementary kids loved it and the high school did too! Everywhere I went, I saw faces with smiles and surprise and awe. You worked so hard, and it paid off. A special thanks to all of you who stayed late Monday setting up and Tuesday cleaning up! I couldn’t have made it without you!!

I took a few pics that you can watch in the slide show below, or click here for a link to all of the pictures on flickr.com. If you’d like to copy a photo, click on the image to open it. Next, right click on the image and select the size you want to view and later copy. The image will re-open and you can either choose to download the size you selected or right click on the image and select whatever option works for you – copy, save, email, etc. I think I’ve made the pictures “public” and you should be able to do all this, but if something doesn’t work, holler!

What are your favorite memories? Post them below! Here are some of my favorite quotes:

“Whoa, how’d you do that?”

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh”

“Where can you buy that?”

“Oooh, it’s going to punch holes all the way through him!” (elementary kids are brutal!)

“Can you eat it?”

And my all time favorite – “Ooh gross! Do it again!”

Physics 4-19-13 Harmonics & Beats

PHYSICS: So why do instruments that are playing the same note sound so different? Here’s the lecture on harmonics & beats.

Have you ever seen sound? Here’s an applet you might be interested in checking out: The vOICe Java Applet. Click on the name, or it’s at http://www.seeingwithsound.com/javoice.htm You might have to update Java – I did.
