Chemistry 10-18-11 Binary Molecular Formulas

CHEMISTRY: Okay, I’m not saying that learning to name and write chemical formulas is as bad as a jellyfish sting, but you do have to really, really pay attention to the details!! Here’s the lecture from today on writing formulas and names for binary molecular compounds. Part of it’s really similar to what you learned to do last week for ionic compounds, but another part is totally different.

Make sure you keep everything straight. Do something that will organize all the information for you, so you won’t get confused. Also, don’t forget the lists you have to memorize, especially the one for next Tuesday – polyatomic ions!! And practice, practice, practice!!!

  1. For our lab tomorrow do we write the objective and procedure in our own works or do we write it exactly how it is in the worksheet?

    • Garrett – You follow just like it is on the lab sheets. You are going to use the procedure from your book to do the lab.

  2. On the formula worksheet what does it mean when it says write names for the compounds that would be formed from the combinations below?

    • Wesley – On one side write the formula, then on the other side name the compound. Do it just like we did in class today.

  3. You must write your procedure in a detailed journal form in order to preform the lab on your own, with only your lab journal.
