PHYSICS: Hey guys, here’s the lecture from Thursday on sound intensity and resonance. Couple of items for discussion – so how does the whole hearing thing work? I mean, I know the little bones in your ear move, but why? Is resonance involved? Great item for discussion. And here’s another – why would different violins produce different sounds? I mean, is a Stradavarius valued so highly just because of the name? Let’s talk more about it Monday. Have a great time with the video tomorrow!
i hope we get to use those big tubes soon! they look like fun
Is there a specific topic for sitn this week?
I’m really enjoying what we are learning in this chapter! π
@ Austin, I’m with you. We should ask her about it on Monday.
I like learning about waves
Do all sounds echo? If so why do we only hear some echoes?
Emily, the reason only some sounds echo is because most echoes are too close to hear. when the ear hears a noise it sets a volume level for a few miliseconds or so and will not process anything above that volume level. Echoes too close will not go above the volume level and are therefore not processed/heard. Echoes far enough away hit the eardrum after that volume level has dissipated and can be heard then. I actually did my SitN on this subject so I can show it to you monday
what is the formula for finding intensity?
I= P/A = power/area= power/(4(pi)d^2)
im not quite understanding the last problem on the homework.
What exactly is resonance?
do we really have a test on friday?
I’m really sad that when we stuck the tubes out of the cars when we drove around to try to hear them make a sound it didn’t work. I think it was JT’s driving.
That was me and not James.. oops.
What is the new date for the test scheduled for Friday?
interestingly enough I already researched some things in sound for a little side project that me and Austin are doing, and I already knew the formulas Length(of a pipe)=wavelength/2 (for open end pipes) and Length(of a pipe)=wavelength/4 (for closed end pipes) after personal experience of testing, these formulas were displayed in the most recent video we watched and work out quite nicely (used these while trying to cut pvc pipes to certain notes, due to crude methods etc. it needs to be tuned a little but from a general standpoint this formula worked out great)
yes Mika, its crazy how we were using this formula the weekend right before Mrs. skinner taught the class about it. im quite please with our results though.
Y’all are crazy haha. Y’all made instruments basically?
Could you guys bring them to class and show me one day? I’d love to see them.
Ditto!!
Mika – Good job! Bring them to class, I’d love to see them! π
What time do we need to be there on Tuesday if we are helping with setup?
Shelby – I’m pretty sure we stay after school on Monday to set up in the gym.
How do we know what we’re signed up for?
I awoke to a thunderclap this morning. As I listened to it rattle -ratta tat tat-and reverberate throughout the houses I could literally feel it shaking the foundation of the earth. Sound is energy.
ms. skinner, what do i need to do for publicity?
I still need a shirt for explore zone. When do we get those?
I am so excited about explorer zone tomorrow.
when do we need to set up tables for explorer zzone? do we still have to do that?
I can not express how excited I am about tomorrow. It is going to be the best ever.
Oh my. Explore Zone was fun but so crazy. Those kids! “Can I have a balloon? i didn’t get one!” Oh well. I hoped they learned something besides some balloons can go really high. haha. It was a lot of fun for the kids though I think. π
