CHEMISTRY: Here’s the lecture from Wednesday on covalent bonds. We’ll start Lewis structures on Friday! Questions about Science In the News? Here it is – if you saw the video on Tuesday or will see it Thursday, you’ll answer the video questions instead of doing the Science In the News. If you don’t see the video, just do a regular Science In the News for Friday. We’ll do the special topic on artificial sweeteners next week, so save that one, if you’ve already done it.

the video that we are going to watch in class is our science in the news right?
January 28th, 2010 at 4:02 PM
Sarah-
Yes the video is our Science In The News
January 28th, 2010 at 7:09 PM
Yeah Sara, its our S.I.T.N.

C-C is longer than C-N but it needs more Bond Energy, why?
January 28th, 2010 at 5:24 PM
if it is non polar, does that mean it’s under 0.3?
January 28th, 2010 at 5:41 PM
katie- yes it does
January 28th, 2010 at 5:57 PM
whats the different between polar and non-polar bonds.
January 28th, 2010 at 6:43 PM
in a polar bond it’s like the electrons are shared unequally between the atoms, giving one side a slightly negative charge and the other a slightly positive charge. in a nonpolar bond the electrons are shared equally.
January 28th, 2010 at 7:00 PM
non-poplr bonds occurs when the electrongativits are identical and polar bonds is mmore correctly termed ioic bonding and occurs when both postive and negative and on side has more

mrs. skinner we did not get to see all of the arsenic video and it did not get to the part of the diagram. so i dont really know what to put down for number 6. ive looked all on the internet but i cant find it.

when is the homework that was due today due?
January 28th, 2010 at 11:05 PM
is the bond weak or strong if the energy is low?
January 30th, 2010 at 4:06 PM
if the energy is low, then the bond is weak.
January 29th, 2010 at 12:35 AM
If the bond length is short, does that mean the bond energy is at a high level?
January 30th, 2010 at 8:13 PM
Lindsey,
The shorter the bond length, the stronger it is. They are inversely porportional
January 29th, 2010 at 3:23 PM
If the bond length is long does that mean that the bond strength is stronger or weaker?
January 29th, 2010 at 5:52 PM
Kamren-
if the bond length is long, than that means it is weaker.
January 29th, 2010 at 3:41 PM
What is the strongest bond?
January 29th, 2010 at 3:48 PM
What happens during a covalent bond?
January 29th, 2010 at 9:56 PM
If it is a covalent bond the electrons are shared between two atoms.
January 29th, 2010 at 5:49 PM
Is a polar bond or a non polar bond stronger?
January 29th, 2010 at 9:58 PM
Polar is stronger
January 29th, 2010 at 7:42 PM
is there any homework due monday even though we didnt have class today?
January 29th, 2010 at 9:59 PM
Ms skinner if we didn’t get all the answers for the Napolean thing can we turn in a SItN on Monday?
January 29th, 2010 at 10:48 PM
so which bonding is the one that shares?
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:07 PM
Covalent bonding shares electrons
January 29th, 2010 at 11:35 PM
what number do they stop being pola bond and become ionic bonds
January 30th, 2010 at 12:32 AM
what is a polar covalent bond?
January 31st, 2010 at 2:49 PM
(power was down friday night)
is the homework from friday night still due monday?
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:22 PM
Josh – mine was too! I’m giving an extension this week on web posts to Sunday midnight.
January 31st, 2010 at 5:59 PM
Isn’t a polar covalent bond where they share the electrons unevenly?
February 1st, 2010 at 11:13 AM
What goes in the center? Hydrogen or Carbon?????????
February 1st, 2010 at 2:31 PM
carbon
February 1st, 2010 at 11:14 AM
katie,,,,,
carbon goes in the middle
February 1st, 2010 at 5:08 PM
What is the Lewis guy’s last name? The Lewis guy that invented Lewis structures…
February 1st, 2010 at 5:16 PM
How do you know which element goes in the middle of the Lewis Structure?
February 1st, 2010 at 5:52 PM
Carbon always goes in the middle and hydrogen never goes in the middle, and after that i think its in the order it list or which ever one has the least. not sure though
February 1st, 2010 at 5:45 PM
So I did a science in the news on artificial sweeteners last week and turned it in before you told us we didn’t have to do one, so will I have to do another one for next week?
February 3rd, 2010 at 5:20 PM
Morgan – topic for next week: artificial sweeteners.
February 1st, 2010 at 7:50 PM
What element is the only one not allowed in the middle of the Lewis Structure?
February 1st, 2010 at 7:52 PM
It is Hydrogen.
February 1st, 2010 at 8:51 PM
why arn’t there more than three types of bonds?
February 2nd, 2010 at 4:12 PM
charlie- yes, electrons are shared unevenly in polar covalent bonds
February 3rd, 2010 at 4:49 PM
When will we get to see what we made on our test?
