Chemistry 10-19-09 Dalton’s Atomic Theory vs. Modern Atomic Theory
CHEMISTRY: Wow! What a lot of theory today! So the smallest thing that can be that thing is an atom. How do we know that? Well, we have to start at the beginning, and that’s Dalton’s Atomic Theory. Great job today comparing it with the Modern Atomic Theory. Keep those examples in mind when you’re studying for the test – especially when it comes to explaining those laws.

Who was the first to suggest the atom? Was it Democritus or Dalton?

Katie, i’m pretty sure it was Democritus, but nobody really believed him until Dalton came into the picture.

Did Dalton have any idea what atoms looked like?

matt, no dalton didnt have any idea he just had guesses. he thought atoms were round balls that varied in size but he did know they were very small.

Even if he did just have guesses, I think it’s pretty amazing how close he came to the modern theory.
