Chemistry 2-10-09 Chemical Names & Formulas, Part 1

CHEMISTRY: Hey guys, here’s the lecture from Tuesday on writing names and formulas for ionic compounds. It’s alot, but you can do it! Be careful!! Have your notes beside you as you get started so you can remember all the little pesky rules. And keep practicing! :)

    Bhale,
The Roman numeral stands for that certain elements charge :]

Emma: The number on the bottom tells how many atoms of whatever the atom is right before it. The number on the top tells the overall charge of the ion. I hope I helped!

How do you know something is an ionic compound?

    Macee Reply:

ashley, in an ionic compound, two atoms share electrons. A molecular compound shares whole units that are covalently bonded molecules.

Why do we have to uses prefixes.

When do we know when to use roman numerals or not?

    Katherine Robinson Reply:

When you’re using the stock system and the cation can have more than one charge: so all transition metals, lead, tin, and nonmetals as a cation.

preston: you use either roman numerals or prefixes never both.

Hey y’all! How do you know when to use prefixes?

why do you only use roman numerals in the prefix system why not with the stock what is the difference

why do elements have more then one charge like iron or copper

  13.   Michael Jekal Says:

Kaele Howard : First, they are “binary”, binary ionic compound is salt consisting of only two elements in which both elements are ions, a cation and an anion. Binary molecular compound forms when two nonmetallic elements are covalently bonded to each other.
