Chemistry 1-21-09 Polyatomic Ions

CHEMISTRY: Try to stare straight at the black dots – I bet you can’t! Speaking of dots, are you starting to see spots in front of your eyes? Here’s the lecture from Wednesday on polyatomic ions. Don’t forget, if you have a negative charge, you get to add that many electrons. And make sure you include brackets and the charge of the ion. BYW, the beginning of this lecture has a review of the previous night’s homework, including a review of resonance.

  2.   Alan Baur Says:

To answer Brittany Chsiholm’s question, lattice energy is the energy released when one mole of an ionic crystalline compound is formed from gaseous ions.

Cody, an ionic compound is one that results from a positive and a negative ion.

I still don’t understand the whole lattice energy chart, which would be bigger one with a higher number or lower number since they are all negative?

  7.   JT Pitner Says:

Marissa-it would be the one with a higher number, like if it were -751 and -639 the one with -751 would have a stringer bond. the minus sign just indicates that energy is released
